Hello everyone
my name is shaun, and after much deliberation, I have decided I want to buy a VW Golf GTi 1.8 turbo. But I have a problem. I want many things on my car, one of which is the full recaro leather interior which was on option on the mk4 , now some websites i.e whatcar.com and parkers say the full leather was only an option on the 'executive car'.
the second part of my problem is that I want to have my golf remapped by angel tuning to 190 bhp, but they have explained that they can only do this for me if I buy a mid '2000' model or later, as they cant do it for a 2000 or earlier?? is this true?
I am struggling to find one off that year with the full leather. was it replaced with the velour recaro? can I have both? meaning can I have the leather on a car that angel tuning can remap ?
thanks alot for your veiws, and please bear with me, as im a newbie to your website

Welcome to the site shaun, I'll move this topic to the mk4 board as I think you'll get more response there. I dont know much about mk4s but I think there is something about different engine codes being able to be tuned differently but maybe one of the mk4 boys or girls will be able to clarify this for you.

 the resident
anorak expert doesnt know this one

No, and he moved it to the mk4 section when there's already a thread in here !    My GTI bible only goes up to mk3 anyway mix !

I'm a newbie too  Basically leather recaro's were an option. You get 3 types of seats in the 1.8T depending on the year of the car. The earlier version's come as standard with VW sports seats. The later versions (2001 on) normally come with recaro cloths. The recaro leathers were an option, which is why you'll have a bit of trouble finding them in the car, there are plenty about though.
The garage will want a mid 2000 or later engine because the engine codes changed in that year. They went from the earlier AUM engines which has bigger port heads and a K03 turbo. The mid 2000-2001 models had an AUQ engine with a K03s turbo and was also DBW (Drive by wire, meaning no accelerator cable). This AUQ engine has more tuning posibilties because of the better turbo that came with it and because of the DBW. The mid 2000 - 2001 models with AUQ engines also came with ASR (traction control) whereas the AUM models didnt.
There are posibilitles with the AUM engine though, as different specialists work with different engines and you'd pretty much get the same power from both from different providers, however, a lot of the providers would want you to upgrade to a K03s turbo as found in the AUQ models.
Easiest way to tell if it's newer or older engine model is to look for an accelerator cable, if there aint one, its DBW and AUQ engine.
Hope that helps!

AGU had bigger valve head better for stupid power levels, AUM is drive by wire and VVT also gives slightly more power from just a remap. Checkout www.uk-mkiv.net its more mk4 specific. Look up Jabbasport, Awesome gti, revotechnik. mines AUM with APR remap supposed to be around 207bhp and 245ft/lb of torque!

The AGU engine was the earlier engine from 1998-2000 (ish) which had the K03 turbo, no VVT and was non DBW.
In the year 2000, the ARZ engine was released which again had the same K03 turbo but received VVT and was DBW.
2001 onwards the AUM engine was fitted to the GTI which had the K03sport turbo, VVT and was DBW, this was 150bhp as standard and should be the minimum engine code you should get if you want to map to bigger numbers.
Mid 2002 saw the 180bhp AUQ engine released in the Anniversary, this was pretty much the same as the AUM but came with 180bhp as standard, some GTI's also had this engine too (mine does ).
The difference between the 150bhp AUM and 180bhp AUQ is just the mapping, the AUM runs at 0.6bar boost, the AUQ 0.8bar boost.
The are more obvious differences to the cars though as the the AUQ got 312mm brakes, 6speed box and a few other bits.
AUM and AUQ engines will map to the same and will generally see around 210bhp / 240lbs torque with no other mods.
AGU and ARZ engines will see around 190bhp / 220lbs of torque, again with just a remap, the difference being that the K03sport turbo can flow more air at higher revs than the K03 turbo hence more torque higher up = more bhp.

Most of this is wrong, see my post above.

Looks like I got the codes the wrong way round then.

Thanks for all the technical replies guys, but unfortunately alot of the acronyms were wasted on me. can someone confirm if I have the follwing correct ?
A. That leather was infact an option on all the 1.8 turbos from 1997 all the way to 2004?
B. That even though angel tuning (The first place I called) said that coiuldnt remap a pre 2000 model, that there will be someone who can?
Also, would revo be bale to remap a pre 2000? as every9one seems to be raving about them?
thanks alot
shaun

Yep, good point about the different heads though.

I have an early 1998 registered mk4 1.8T 150bhp, thinking of chipping some point in future and have had several conversations with the chaps at http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/ who have assured me despite my car coming out of the factory in 1998 the APT tune will still knock out 196bhp. the later drive by wire 2000+ models achieve a higher 207bhp. On the earlier non drive by wire cars u can experience 196bhp but without as many 'options' on the chip, i.e. you may simply be able to switch on or off as opposed to other options available on later models......check out www.goapr.co.uk for all the info.
hope this helps a bit??!

Revo can do any of them and as far as i'm aware have one of the best reputations

right so for all us in the process of buying Gti's we want an AUG or AUM engine in it becuase theres more potential for tuning.
Whilst on the subject of tuning how much boost can the standard turbo on those engines hold before you start having problems because they both seem to be running just less than 1/2 a bar boost?
Also is it possible to fit a dumpvalve becuase of the low boost?
Cheers
Paul

No, AGU is the old engine.
You want an AUM or AUQ which are both DBW and have K03sport turbos - see my post above!!!!!
You really dont want to be fitting dump valves, stick with diverter valves which is what the engine/ecu was designed to run.
