Just on our way back from Legoland after a family half-term break and the car started with an intermittent misfire.
Discussed with Mrs Buck about getting on the phone to VW first thing tomorrow to get it checked.
Driving at a steady 70 when the engine light came on and the DIS declared Engine Fault - Workshop!!
Fearful of stopping on the hard shoulder (on an unlit stretch at that) so limped to the services
Spoken to VW Assistance - can't praise them enough - they have us as priority due to the boys being with us and Mr RAC should be with us "within 90 minutes"
Just having a coffee and calming down - not what you'd expect with a 2 year old car. Let's see if we're home by midnight!?
-
Keep us posted, hope its okay and you get home safe
-
As long as your all ok you'll be just fine
-
Thanks guys
I'm hoping it's the spark plug issue that a few had with the GTIs. Simple swap out and on our way.
At least we're safe and not stuck on the hard shoulder.
-
@Asker - thanks for the words and yes, was exactly one of my questions to Craig re remapping.
@Neil - thanks. Will be in touch re wheels over the next day or so. Would like to collect before the weekends out of you're around.
Update - RAC gut came out as no dedicated VW Assistance immediately available. No faults showing on his laptop/general OBCD software so sent us on our way, following for a couple of junctions with a VW home visit booked for 8am.
All OK so he left us then, yes you guessed, broken down on hard shoulder. Currently stood on other side of Armco waiting for a recovery agents vehicle.
They rang and quoted up to 3 hours to get us recovered "due to Taco(graph not Mexican) laws and not having enough time to get us 70 miles home.
Needless to say I've been back on the phone to RAC. Waiting for them to call me with a solution but man now on his way to get us safely off the hard shoulder.

Really feel for you. Awful. Not a nice end to a fun day. Damn cars.

FYI diesels don't have spark plugs

@Doc - shows what I know :embarassed:
Update: one phone call later and heaps of praise for VW Assistance/RAC control team - Just watched the GTD put onto a recovery truck and setting off in a mo.
God it was quite chilly stood out there for that time. Boys (and Mrs Buck) were very good in the circumstances.
-
Don't they give you a car?
If your not far away you can borrow mine if you insure it
-
Doc
They will have one with me tomorrow if the VW home visit can't diagnose and sort the fault. (Sod's law says whatever part is needed shall be out of stock and on back order!)
-
Cool, glad to hear it.
My 2p is on an injector but it could be number of things to be honest.
-
I'll let you know if you're right once the clever man has been out tomorrow.
Virtual pint and a pat on the back if you are!! ;)

ill see your 2p and raise you a further 2p by betting it being on cylinder #2  .. although i can't see a home-visit tech whipping the cam cover off to check the resistance :undecided:
-
If you unplug the faulty one the car will run you know oh checker of silly 1.8t actuators
-
yeah i know but the clips on the injector plugs are fiddly little bleeders.. plus it's any excuse to get the multimeter out for me. makes me look clever
-
Home
Tired but relieved. Off to bed.
-
Good luck today - let us know how you get on and what they give you

Roadside Assistance arrived just before 8.
Car has just been towed away - off to the dealers.
Technician's money is on it being the crankshaft sensor. We went for a quick drive whilst he had the laptop plugged in and we'd only got a 150 metres when it replicated the error which was good in that he was recording the data at the time.
He reckons the garage will have the car until Monday more due to workload rather than my cars specific problem.
Just waiting for the replacement to arrive now.
-
Hire car is an 11 plate silver Golf
It's a 1.2 S TSi 85ps  better than no car though so not really grumbling.
Haven't driven it yet but off out this PM so will see how it compares
-
What a nightmare.
You seem to have been looked after okay though so far so fingers crossed it's something simple and quick to fix.
-
Hi
It could have been a lot worse. Garage have phoned to say they may start to look at it tomorrow but more likely Monday.
-
Phone call today to say it is the crankshaft sensor.
Part on order. Might arrive tomorrow but most likely will get car back Monday.

So what caused that to go ? :undecided:
-
Apparently just a faulty sensor. Not caused by anything particular in terms of driving.
Technician said to me that electronics are now the weakest part of a car due to having so much in even a basic car and the engine using all the data to adjust how the engine runs. One failure and computer says no! Limp mode engaged to protect the mechanics but in the end it's a cheapish switch that went.
Not sure what's involved in accessing this to replace but can't imagine it'd be cheap for the labour involved.
-
Hope it gets sorted out mate , i'm sure it will got to be a first GTD I've heard on here with this sort of problem? :undecided:
-
Cool, I owe topher 2p
-
Collected my GTD this afternoon.
All appears well - it was the crank sensor (G28 - whatever that means?)
A £50 part, a couple of sundry items and three hours labour - job done.
Didn't get the the chance for a spirited drive on the way home but all seems well with the car!!
Shame they can't wash cars properly though - my 6 year old could do better :(
-
Another Sensor failure like my Breakdown...definitely a trend going on here....
I had the gutless wonder 1.2 smoke infested rental golf S, which model did you get?

That'll be the same one as me - 1.2S in Silver that somebody had smoked like a chimney in so it reeked inside :(
At least I had transport though so wasn't stuck in the house.
