Regretfully, I feel it is time to get a new car and at the moment I have a Mk3 16v GTi sat on the driveway with a few problems but nothing that someone with a little mechanical knowledge couldn't sort out.
So here are the problems:
ABS light on, rear brakes, discs and pad just replaced, possibly a dodgy ABS sensor.
Cracked windscreen, will need replacing before next MOT.
Broken dipstick housing.
Runs a little rich.
Aside from that, the car is fine, all bodywork is rust free apart from the driver's side trim (not sure what it's called but it's the "sideskirt" thing that is removable), the paintwork is pretty good for it's age aside from a patch on the passenger door, not rusted, looks as though a solvent may have come into contact with it in the past.
I have no interest in doing any work to the car and so my question is this, how much would it be worth in it's current condition? and would I get more for it selling it as spares or repair or stripping it and selling the parts?
Thanks.
Dan.

To be fair, unless in tip top condition, Mk3's are not worth very much. Even people with fine examples are struggling to shift theirs at the moment. Even braking it up as spares wont yeild too much money and you have to take into account the time you spend stripping it and finding buyers. If its still on the road I would just try and sell it that way and see what happens. Does it owe you anything and is there a minimum price you would be looking for it?

Pics? Location?

Located in Warminster, Wiltshire.
Really not sure about the price, I only bought it 8 months ago but really don't know how much it's worth now.

For the cost of the replacement glass you could get a new car.
Sorry buddy, I think it's terminal.

Can you not go through insurance?
-
Only if you have cover. If you buy a car with a cracked screen you can't claim it on your insurance.
Not legally anyway.
-
but perhaps Illegally
-
ill give you a ton for it?
-
i bought a new screen for mine when i had the car painted. its a pilkington glass too so a good one. cost me 110 quid, my insurance wanted 90.. but was more hassle so just bought the one without going through insurance
if thats all thats wrong with it, id say the car is worth 500/600 depends how much tax/mot is on etc.. paint looks pretty swirly but that can be fixed
p.s if u break it, ill take that lower splitter as i need a spare
-
I have just bought a standard 1.6 in excellent condition with 11 months MOT and 4 months tax for £425. I looked at a few others for slightly less one of which was a GTI with not tax or MOT and that was £200.
I know all cars are different but that may give you a benchmark.
I have stripped a few Landrovers in my day but once all the best bits go you end up with it on your drive for ages and then it ends up at the skip. Stripping is not worth it in my opinion unless you are in it for the long haul. Good luck with selling it.

I'll give you scrap value for it? I'm only in Trowbridge!
-
£150?
-
why are you selling it?
ABS light is probably a sensor or something mines been on for about 3 years! also dipstick housing is what fiver if that off ebay?
All it really needs is a new windscreen and a good wash/wax with some decent branded stuff, and possibly a new sill trim which is about £15 from vw and no longer comes with metal in them so whats happened to yours wont happen again
breaking this or selling for peanuts imo is just a waste of time and money, good as new for around £150 and thats generous, I got my replacement screen for £100 so that gives you £50 for sill trim dipstick and some elbow grease

The sill trims are over £25 each
-
they are about 22 quid last time i got one
-
Bring it to Swindon as scrap value here is £250.
-
They were £13 when I got mine last year :undecided:
even if they are £25 its hardly bank breaking, imo scrapping or selling for peanuts over the small amount that is wrong with it is crazy
-
seems you bought the car cos you liked it!
why wud you not spend a small amount of time and money, effort to make it/her sweet again, unless there is more work, engine rich?
-
In any other circumstance I'd stick with it and get it running sweet again, the thing is, I have another car (a golf!) and I'm just finding it expensive to keep two cars now, as well as that my work takes up all of my time, I just don't have the free time to deal with it.
As to running rich, this is what I have been told by the mechanic at work, he said something about checking and cleaning out the air system, my mechanical knowledge is not great so I don't know the ins and outs of it. The reason is due to some sooty deposits and occasional white smoke from the exhaust.
-
I wud still keep this this 16v  !!!
-
White smoke is headgasket!
But as its occasional I guess a lot of moisture is getting in from somewhere!
-
white/blue is oil
maybe this is the true reason why your selling it :lipsrsealed:
-
My 8v used to stink of petrol at the rear, did have a K&N cone fitted! Which I took off as it made the acceleration worse and way more thirsty!
Could be lambda probe no? Of its running rich? what sort of MPG is she giving?
Does it have a performance filter?
-
I'm trying to sell my 16v and getting no interest...it's sad now...if an older car needs tyres it almost not worth the money...I have a huge service history...what's the point when it's only worth peanuts?
-

Like I said before, I'm not a mechanic, I'm only going on what I've been told, I was told it was running rich and to clean out the air filter system. If its oil, air or whatever, I have no interest in fixing it because I have a new car and just want rid of it.
Suggesting that I'm trying to flog it deceitfully knowing it has a different problem is not particularly constructive.
I posted on here looking for advice and if you don't have anything constructive to say then please don't waste your time or mine posting.
