Has anyone had any experience with the NEX series?
Or any mirrorless for that matter...
I'm looking at the NEX5 - particularly for it's video quality.

I was looking into the NEX5 series for aaaaaages, I will dig out the thread for you.
It was about 6 months ago and I went for DSLR because of worries about these been a gimmick and since then there has been very little in the way of development. The lenses are limited and look rather silly too. The kit bag you would need to carry about would be slr size anyhow and an slr gives a hell of alot more bang for your buck.

If you are only interested in video you should check out the nikon d5000, its the cam I have (biast or what) and the popout screen and optional grap handle is ideal. I know alot of the extreme sports guys use the d5000 and get some amaizing edits due to liveview and popout screen. Here is one decent example of what can be done in 3day by a 17yr old and the d5000 with a couple of decent lenses.

decent video cameras are really quite cheap! id say buy a dslr and a video camera and a carry bag then you'll have both with you at all times.

+1
a dslr / 4/3 for video is only any use if you're static or using a tripod.
the only real reason to get something like the NEX is the compact size, e.g. street shooting / travel photography at which point an entry DSLR is a consideration, slightly bigger but light given the plastic bodies and get you on the DSLR route / second body.
