I know I should use the search function but there is quite a lot of info to go through
I'm looking into upgrading to the LED rears, my car is a July 09.
Can someone advise ..
1. what I need
2. How much
3. Where from
Many thanks

At the risk of sounding like an old man yes you should have used the search function. Found this link in a thread after 30 seconds of looking - http://www.mk6golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,81.0.html
If you dont want to take on the task yourself any VAG garage worth its salt will be able to do it for you.

Snoopy was the most recent person on here to purchase the rear lights, from memory.
Yours may well be okay, but some 09 cars (like my previous mk6) get a bulb out light in the dash even after VCDS coding. You quickly get used to it but it is a nuisance none the less.
Mine was one of the launch cars though and I'm not aware of too many that had the issue.

Mmmm thats my fear, a bulb out light or any light for that matter would negate the benefits of having them for me as a bit of a perfectionist.
If only there was a 100% way of knowing either way. :undecided:
I guess I should have done some additional homework before buying the car then i would have been aware of these subtle differences, the fact is I was blown away by the cars looks and stance when I saw it at a BMW franchise whilst in for a service, little did I know things could get better.
Oh well I got if for a good price so I'll have to keep investigating unless someon pops along with a definative answer

What age is your GTI?
Mine is April 2010 and had no issues with the coding, once I finally got the correct coding for factory Xenons and LED rears.
I guess if your car has the same controller as mine, or newer, it will be OK.

The midlands, live near Ashby De La Zouch.
Car is a July 2009 so could well be a launch model.

VCDS scan is the only way 100% confirm the situation. However, if the car is on an 09 plate and doesn't have Xenon's 99% of the time it will require a CEM upgrade to support LED rears from my experience.

My car is an early car too and needed a new BCM, I purchased one that supported LED rears. It cost £90 and I purchased it from eBay.de SteveP then very kindly switched my BCM over and everything is working perfectly.
Cheers,
Jim

I'll jump on this thread too as i'd like some recommendations for suppliers of the adapters which the OP will need too. Who did you use (links?) and are they any good?
Cheers chaps

Mike and SteveP are all knowing mate, they can tell you exactly what is required, what versions you needs and suppliers.
Sorry for offering up your advice Steve and Mike but I wouldn't do anything without getting your views first :embarassed:

I bought the adaptors from german Ebay item number at the time was 400234029875 I think they still sell them.
The service could not have been better they came within a couple of days of placing the order, well packaged wrapped in bubble wrap in a solid cardboard box and the pins and plugs were Genuine VW.
Someone else here gave me the link and i thank them for it.

Cheers snoops, just checked that number with my iphone, i can't read german but i think they're still available  so i'll prob order a set of those. I've asked this before but just to confirm that they haven't changed, are these still the correct part numbers for the R LED's:
5K0 945 093 Q (Inner Light)
5K0 945 094 Q (Inner Light)
5K0 945 095 L (Outer Light)
5K0 945 096 L (Outer Light)

Hi Folks,
I'm new on here and am in Ireland.
MY car is an ex UK Mark 6 Golf GTI , it was on a 59 Plate ( LM59AYS )and was first reqistered in the UK on 24th October 2009.
Do you think this model would be ok for the rear LEDs regarding the coding issue?
Also the cost of the rear OEM R LEDs on TM Tuning are $800 plus $50 for the adaptors plus 19% vat and shipping , so they are quite expensive.
Just wondering if they can be sourced elswhere or via any group buys ?
Many thanks for your help
By the way the car is a cracker !!!

Awesome GTI in Manchester are selling them for £506.83 Inc VAT.
http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=27530&xSec=2646
You may find them cheaper elsewhere. With regards to whether your BCM will support the lights with error lights, your best bet is to get a VCDS scan to tell you if the version you have will be ok.
Welcome to the forum btw.

I just got a quote from my dealer for R tails, £465.46 with 10% off inc VAT, think i may go for them tbh, my car is a march 10 build without xenons, do we think i'll have the dreaded bulb out issue?
And i was told the same thing Snoopy, that they are all Q's now.

I would be very surprised if you have the bulb out issue, but get a VCDS scan to be 100% sure.

Thanks for the super fast reply Steve!
Now all i need is someone local with VCDS................hmmm?
-
If you tell us where you are then someone might be able to help
-
Good point! i'm near Walsall in the West Midlands.

There are a few owners of VCDS's cables around your area, try Stealthwolf, he's in Birmingham and normally happy to help.

Is the VCDS something a dealer would do if selling you the parts or is this asking too much of the VW techs ?!?

Some might but the vast majority won't.

I think I'll wait until I can get it checked by one you Guys on here as if they refuse or try to charge me I will get frustrated with them.
Definetly on the to do list as very cool looking and oem+.

Some second hand one's on ebay at the moment.

Alot of bids already, i think they will end up going for the same price as the brand new sets advertised on Ebay. I was watching them last night
-
My car is July 09 and no bulb out warning lights on it, though I do have factory specced xenons.
^^ same as above, no problems here
-
Has anyone on here retro fitted them and has standard halogens with no issues? If so when (roughly) was your car built?
Also, did anyone figure out if the LED's can be coded to behave like the halogens when the boot is opened? ie if you unlock the car in the dark and open the boot, the inner lights go out so they don't blind you as it opens.
-
Cheeky bump :embarassed:
-
@Jimble:
My car is BW8 and SteveP had a few issues with my Halogens and the LEDs as my BCM was a new type at the time of fitting. But he sorted it second time round and has the details on his laptop. PM him for details.
They work perfectly and when the boot is opened, the inner lights turn off.
All the best.
-
Thanks Asker.
-
Don't worry it will be fine - one way or another
-
I've every faith mate, ordered the adapters from ebay.de at 13:30 today, at 14:15 had an e-mail saying they'd been dispatched!!!!
-
Cool, we can use my car for testing bits n bobs too.
That another member in that day to have his warranty voided too
-
Sshh! Don't mention warranty's i might change my mind!!
-
Yes, Doc, installing the rear LEDs blew up his engine as they were incompatible with REVO.

£439.60 inc vat, thats 15% off from £517 so not too bad really plus £35 for the adapters from ebay.de.

I wonder what the staff discounted price is then? Is it easier/cheaper to buy the adpators than order the parts and push them together?
-
I'm going to be getting mine from www.bks-tuning.com
Can get the OEM Golf R Tail LEDS for $447 including adapters, shipped from germany. By far the cheapest i have found them anywhere.
-
They are $659 befroe VAT on that website,

How did you get a 15% discount at a dealer
I sent a mail to the local dealer here yesterday and they offered 10% without any negotiation so hopefully 15% is achievable, still alot of money but in reality only 5-6 tanks of fuel these days :(
The dealer I spoke to/mailed was TL Darby, Burton on Trent, a guy called David Woolley
-
How did you get a 15% discount at a dealer
Just asked, first one i rang said they'd do 10% and so rang a couple more who said they'd do 10% and the last one said he could do 15% so went with them.
...and which dealer?!
Willenhall Coachcraft.
-
Thanks for that
-
No worries, i've got them now and they look superb upclose! i'm really looking forward to getting them fitted now!!

There is a set of the lighter ones for sale on ebay at the mo, the sellers after around £350.

Its actually not that much less at staff.
The parts to make the adaptors use to work out more expensive. Due to the exchange rate its probably more expensive to buy them from Germany now but its less hassle. Which is why i went that route as saving a pound or two but having to spend time soldering and joining cables is a busmans holiday for me so i value my spare time more.
-
I am looking at upgrading my rear lights to the Golf R LED's, my car is a June 09 so i guess i will need to upgrade my BCM to stop the bulb out error. I have seen loans on Ebay.de, but what part number do i need to support the rear LED's there are so many, thanks
-
You need something like an 087 D with software index above 300
-
Steve, thanks. Once i get it all sorted i will be in touch to help with coding for some beer tokens if thats ok. The fitting looks pretty straight forward from the how to guide, i think i can manage that.
-
It's best to fit and code at the same time so the existing one can be read first
-
Ok, so would be worth holding out on the BCM until fit new ones and check existing BCM out, might have to get the lights as an early xmas prsent,
Im gonna go to my local dealer, see if they can give me abit of a discount for the lights as my car is in next Monday having my random alarm looked at.
-
I'd given a member on here first refusal on my R LEDs but he's just bought a set of brand new ones, so check out the for sale section if you want a set at considerably less than retail!
And hurry up as I'm likely to change my mind about selling them ...
-
ill have a look right now, thanks
-
Ill take them, perfect
-
Ah shucks - missed these - I'm looking for a set of R LED rears - might have to go to the dealer for some.
-
LED rears should be here tomorrow, thanks Exonian. Cant wait
-
I'll get some pictures of mine up as soon as i get chance to wash the car!

My rear LED's have arrived, thanks Exonian, packaged well enough to prevent earthquake damage. In perfect condition.
My ED35 gear knob and gaiter also arrived at the same time, by a different courier, so let the mods begin
-
Pics fitted???
-
not fitting until Weds, thats when SteveP can come over to do the coding. So got to hold out until then. Will do the gear knob over the weekend though, all pics to follow
-
Good stuff
Might be getting some LED rears myself - just waiting for a price....

Pleasure dealing with you Paul.
The R LEDs are such a good mod. I'll have to make do with my pink GTI ones now!!
Don't forget to start an ED35 gearknob thread - could be the next big thing!!
-
Here is the link of where i got it from, i needed to replace my original one anyway as it was really scratched. It was the same price for the ED35 one. It worked out at £163 including delivery, so quite abit cheaper than a UK dealer.

Hi Folks,
See ebay link for the LED rears , they seem cheap , I emailed them and they said they were OEM VW , anyone know anything about these , do you reckon they are copies ?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160679671943&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123
Thanks

They do look cheap. The pictures are also not the best. I'd ask them to confirm the part numbers.
Also, are they L or RHD?
-

+1
Also ask them to send you a picture of the lights in there packaging. If they are genuine VAG group then the boxing should signafy this.
-
I did that , they just said they were genuine OEM VW , but depite asking they didn't give the part numbers , I think I will avoid them , it's a big spend so I want to get it right rather than trying to save a £100 and waste £300!
Thanks for the comments
-
Fitting mine thisafternnon along with the ED35 gear knob, then SteveP is comming over late afternoon to do the coding for me,(thanks) and confirm if i need to get a new BCM.
Pretty sure i will as i have a June 09 car. So that will add another £100 to the conversion. But well worth the cost as it makes the back end look so much better
-
I bought my smoked tails from Mr. P who also fitted them in less than 30 mins and perfectly. Say hi! to him from me. Ask him about the fun he had coding mine.
These tails are so beautiful and in my opinion the most beautiful tails on the planet. I, to this day, have never stopped admiring them. They transform the car much more than Bi-Xenons do. The best external mod bar none.
Enjoy your rear forever.
-
Rear LED's and ED35 gearknob fitted, easier than i thought

They look the buisness. Best mod there is on a Mk6.
p.s. now you have time to clear the leaves on your drive
-
It certainly finishes off the back of the car nicely
It could be the camera angle but the left of your tailgate doesn't seem to sit level with the actual body work. The lines don't flow. Which is one thing VW are always boasting about.
I like the gear knob.
-
Very nice ! Did you need to change the BCM ?
-
The leaves are a nightmare, i have the biggest tree in the world outside shedding at the moment. I have to park the car so close to the house or you cant see it in the morning.
A big thanks to Steve who just came round and sorted the bulb out error, i dont need to change my BCM which is a result, Steve was surprised to. Also sorted my comming home fuction, so the lights come on now as i open the door. The dial staging couldnt be done as my cluster is to old, which was a shame,
Thanks again Steve for your help, im sure ill be in contact soon for the next round of mods.
-
Hadnt noticed the boot alignment, will have a look in the daylight tomorrow. The pic was taken with the car at abit of an angle to the front door.
-
Congratulations Paul. Are they not simply a joy to behold?

Very nice, I too am surprised you didn't have to change the BCM. Re the coming home function I need mine done, I have having to flash the main beam to get it to come on.
Note to self, must tap up SteveP to do it for me next time I bump into him.....
Jim
-
I absolutely love the lights they look so much better.
I just went to the garage to fill up, had a look at my boot alignment and sure enough it is out a touch, well spotted i hadnt noticed before. So need to sort that now, as it will anoy me.
-
I had the car in the dealers on Monday sorting out my alarm going off on its own, they did a sofware upgrade of some sort to sort out a glitch, Steve recons it might have been that upgrade that mean i had a newer than normal software version on the BCM.
Saved me a couple of hundred quid, which rounded off the day nicely
-
Lookin' good Paul
-
Hi Folks,
I got my car connected to vagcom this morning to check the BCM and it showed I have part number 1KO 937 087 C , does anyone know if this will support the LED rears ?
My car does not have xenons but apart from that is pretty high spec from factory if that has any impact .
Can't wait to get the tails and just want to make sure of before I purchase !
-
It's not the part number it's the software version that's important. Do you have an autoscan of the car from when VCDS was connected?
-
Hi Steve,
I'm not sure , I will check it out and get back to you .
Cheers
-
Got the LED R lights fitted , didn't need to change the BCM as it had a software index of 537 , so all was good!
Also got voice control added and got the firmware and maps updated on the RNS 510 .
Must get some pics up the lights look great , very pleased .
Ken
-
Nice one, they do look amazing well worth the money. Make the back of the car look so much better
-

They are the number one mod IMO.
Interestingly when I spoke the other day to my dealer regarding trade-in prices they were interested in keeping them on the car instead of me returning it to standard!!!
Jim
-
I bet they were, as new GTI get the lighter ones as standard now. No way trade it in with them on, you could get you money back on Ebay or on here.

Hello everyone
New to the site tonight, although not a new golf man
1st 1986 CL
2nd 2000 MK4 GTI
3rd 2005 MK 5 GTI
4th and current 2009 GTI
Like everyone else, really into the LED rear conversion and trigger finger hovering over the buy button re € 459.80 = 385.342657 British pounds
which inlcudes lights and cables
are these cool to buy and will they plug and play,
and is there anyone up here in Glasgow who can check the coding etc. just to make it tight
I have xenons
Thanks a lot
Guy444444

They sure are plug and play, real easy to install takes about 20 mins. Not sure if you will need any coding doing, as you have xenons so just make sure the ignition is off when you do the job. At worst i think you may get a bulb out error that will need to be reset, but the lights should work fine. Mine worked exactly as they should.
-
Hi
Thanks for responding
Appreciate it
Will give it a go and report back
-
LEDs installed
-
Hope it all went as straight forward as mine, they do look so much better
