Title: 8v Gearbox on a 16v - Straight forward?
Post by: iyda on 24 October 2011, 22:52
In my struggle to find a gearbox for my '91 MK2 GTi 16v 1.8 it is looking more like i am going to have to go for an 8v box.

Just got a couple of questions!

Is it a straight forward swap, do i just need to get an 8v clutch?

Will it affect the performance in any way, or is it not really noticeable?

Yes you need to change the clutch but I think the ratios are wrong  :undecided:

Have a go on the search function.

There is also this in the maintenance section: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=30850.0

Ratios are generally very similar, it's just the final drive that's different.

You will need a new clutch set up as the splines on the output shaft are different in number, 24 to 21 I think.

Ok, apologies for sounding thick! I don't know anything about this sort of stuff! :embarassed:

So, i have seen an AUG box from an 8v, will this fit into the 16v as long as the clutch is changed too?
