Title: passat turbo options
Post by: danny_p on 24 October 2011, 00:35
got a bit of a ratteling wastegate on my passat as it's been a good old bus so far thinking about giveing it some bits mainly so the wastegate rattel dosent piss me off anymore.

so are there any off the shelf turbo's cheeply avalible that give it some much needed extra power i can ether recon or get reconned that'll just bolt up or am i going to have to start makeing things ?  think i'm limuted to a ko3s  chould proably bastardise one with some ko4 bits or is it just going to be easyer to make a better turbo fit

planning to pull the engine out over crimbo as it needs a clutch and a freshen up as it's rapidly approcahing 190k miles so while it's out i'll overhaul it and swap some bits about to make it more duarable so no danger of it poping.

k04-015 is supposed to be good for over 230bhp

I think it depends what you have now.
From what I have heard, and dont take this as gospel as I havent looked into it fully, if you have a K03 now then best option is a KO3s. The KO4 is much more difficult to make fit.
Suggest you join UK Passats and ask on there.

have a k03s kickin about so chould try that but as supspected that seems to be the biggest bolt on turbo so i'm just going to get welding

K04-015 = 240-250bhp with the supporting mod, 380cc injectors, FMIC, sport/de-cat system and full exhaust system.

Copy

(limiting factor on this one was the clutch we had room for much more power imo)

R-Tech Custom Remap SessionAudi2001 A4 1.8T 150bhp with K04-015 -  FMIC - BAM 380cc injectors - decat & turbo back, cheap DV stock air box and filter

First step
To spend 1hour getting the BAM 380cc injectors to run spot on to get the fuel trims are with in range, this involves a lot of trial an error testing with data logs vs fuel constants and correction maps.

Once the fuel was correct on a stock map I knew what ever I asked from the injectors when tuning they would respond in the correct manner (as long as fuel pump and oem maf stayed within range) and be safe

Next step:
knowing the 015 turbo (same as the K04-001 which I had been using for the past year) I know what the safe starting point load and boost request would be 190% around 1.3bar request, so I dialed the load maps to request to make around 1.45bar peak and 1.2 bar at the top end, plus at the same time set the lambda maps to provide 13.2:1 in the midrange and 12.1:1 at the top end (a little extra fuel to be safe)

The first few logging power runs with the custom map came back with 191bhp 213bhp... which from 1.45bar peak and 1.2 held is very low..due to stock timing advance but was only to check the fuel and boost control

The next step was to setup the timing advance for full load conditions.. This is the bit which will amaze everyone, with the same boost and fuel the ignition advance managed to produce another 57bhp 58lbft 248bhp 264lbft.   I was still at the point of adding ignition advance until the clutch started to slip..    We set the timing back to stop the slip and carried out more logs to find the max timing pull as only 2s & 3s CF (on 95 fuel)

End result for the day was 234bhp 271lbft without clutch slip and 1.45bar peak boost, tomorrow we need to spend  2 hour on the road and dyno setting up the boost pids  to smooth the graph out, maybe try and induction kit to help the power after 6000rpm.

how much is one of these k04-015's  ?

the other question is has anyone done anything with IHI VF34 on the 20vt ?  how sutable / power outputs    it'll be running on e85 as well

found a spare APU for the takeing so took that into work and rebuilt it with 225 pistons, rods and the obligatry arp bolts, tri cut seats and valves.
know i need to sort and intercooler but i don't think it'll take much to mount up a FMIC once the fount of the cars off,  probs do when fitting engine. a better recirc valve forge 007 seems to the one everyone goes for.

forge 007p is the one (green spring I believe, go to awesome as there cheapest around)... oh and front inter coolers do look good but there's not much room behind the bumper, so expect to modify or fit an after market (chav?) one

Have you got a build thread as mines an apu and I have some idea's but need to see what works etc
