Ok so i been for a blast up 2 blackpool over the weekend from sunny Dudley,,
I havnt took my car on motorway for about 3 years now,
I took it upto about 115 an it seemed fine,
But i remember watchin a Top gear episode an jezza said that a well looked after 16v could go upto 140mph,
My missus was loffin when i told her this as she thinks my car is an OLD BANGER,
Has anybody ever achieved this 140 mph in a standard 16v
-
140 aka 125
-
I've had my 8v up to 120 on the speedo...on a private road
-
I had my 16v up to 135 absolute flat out, terrible blurred windscreen/mirrors between 125 and 130 not funny, that was on the standard engine just before it died at 130k.
I was stupid and a bit careless if I look back now
-
my 8v, bored out to 1.9L with formulapower 10mm ht leads, iridium plugs, 421 stainless mani, decat and full system, pipercross panel filter will pull of the clock, which goes to 120mph, what the actual speed is though i have no idea aha all done on a private road of course :nerd:
-
100-120 tops. Ignore the clocks they are hugely inaccurate at anything after 100.
-
So what was Jezza on about then,
My Tom Tom was sayin 115 aswell, I though they was accurate,,
-
Good point I did not have a Tom Tom back in the day, would not go past 135 on the dial so what ever that is in reality who knows.
-
I got 120 out of a talbot alpine years ago so i bet the 16v is good for 140
Im older and wiser now though, I still like to take my valver up the motorway to stetch her legs  and she pulls well to just over 100 when i bottle it. ( I need my licence for my job!)
It depends on your tyres too, larger diameter, higher top speed, at a lower rpm
-
Yeah i doe think i would like 2 go over 120 in it ,
Ya never know whats gunna happen in a 24 year old car,
I remember when i 1st had it though in 2001 i went paintballin up knutsford and was tryin 2 keep up with a Integra Type R, Im sure i was close on 135 , But that was a 1 off showin off with my mates,,
-
I have hit the rev limiter in 5th in my mk2 16v turbo, drove it flat out for about a mile gently bouncing off the limiter, clocks showed about 147, no rattles or anything, just fast!!
Not 100% how accurate the clocks are though...
-
I did a total of 6 hrs drivin, an didnt see another Mk2 Golf ,
But i kept mine in fast lane all the time i could
-
My kjet abf, with 195 45 15 tyres, 02a gearbox + sensor on 1.3 cable and 1.8 16v clocks makes 135 on speedo, twice a day, and if I really have loads + loads of road I've managed a needles thickness below 140, so 137.5 ish. Not verified by any other means I.e sat nav etc
-
Does not really matter unless you have a runway next door to your house
-
Had an indicated 143 in my 16v. 144 and it'll hit the limiter and being an older limiter it will kill the power rather than just keep it on the limiter as modern cars would. Car was also quite young at the time (maybe 4 years old), carrying stuff as well. No vibration either, just had the world flying past real quick. Upset the owner of a new Toyota Celica 4WD Turbo though to find the 16v still hanging onto him.
Since it's rebuild about 7 years ago, I've had it back up to an easy 135 for a few miles. Not something I'd do often though.
-
had e630 mme in 1990 it was 1 yr old small bumper tornado red valver. 3 up and luggage totally mullered a renault5 gt turbo on a1 to harrogate pulling away easy at 100+, saw an indicated 140 by myself on other occasions, if you consider the manufacturers 5% built in optimism thats not too shabby for a 1.8 N/A, and back in the day they were the standard hothatch to beat.
used to piss all over escort rs turbos
astra gte 16v had a tad more power but handled sh1te
-
Does not really matter unless you have a runway next door to your house
I have. And mine hasn't gone over an indicated 110mph, as I don't need the points.

I was just about to say really then I remembered where / who you work for
-
meh :smug:
my clocks over-read by 10%+ so its feels like you're going faster
-
Top speed is irrelevant.
Approbation, kudos and exaltation is all that matters.
-
Ive hit 135 in a standard 16v.
-
I managed to blag a test drive on my own in a new Jetta 16V in around 1987. I remember seeing an indicated 135mph on a downhill stretch, with a bit more to come.
I don't think I've been over 80mph in my current valver. If you go too fast, less people get to see how cool it looks.
-
Had just over 120mph out of my 8v on the sat nav.

Did you not think it sounded as if it was about to explode? Mine does... and then does haha

Tut tut
On a private road i hope
-
Airfield
-
So basically, If you are a 5 star General on here the 16v only goes about 110-115
But if ya just live on here or a regular then they go 155+
-
144 indicated on speedo, 134 indicated on satnav, half tank of Shell Gogo juice, and 2 up, cold November evening last year
Thom
-
100 is the fastest I've been in mine lol All change once it's running!
-
Theoretically the top speed is about 145MPH assuming a 7200RPM rev limit and 195-50-15 tyres.

It was fine, just gently bouncing off the limiter, explolsion didn't even cross my mind to be honest!
-
Yeah theoretically my car should do 145,
Cause my speedo needle replicates my rev needle in 5th ge3ar,
4000 rpm = 80mph
5000 rpm = 100
6000 rpm = 120
7000 rpm = 140
An then the little bit after 7000 rpm,
Followed by plenty of smoke out back i reckon,,

Nick
I could cruise flat out at ~130 (speedo) / ~117 (sat nav) in my 8v. It could easily hold the speed - but I certainly couldn't, 120 in a 25 year old car, slammed on sh!tty coilovers - too unnerving for me!
-
i had my old 16v at 135 on the clocks engine was on 140k
-
The valvers would go even faster if they didnt have the stupidly short 5th
-
The old What car reviews say a tested figure of 129 mph and 125 mph.
VWaudi mag test review says 130mph
-
they do 160 dont they? thats what the speedo goes up to
-
they do 160 dont they? thats what the speedo goes up to
-
For reference, my Mk3 16v maxes out at just under 140, SatNav 133. Fraction under 7000rpm. On a private road mind (otherwise known as the M45).

Boats can't do 133mph ...
-
my vr read 145 (with more to offer) once but the speedo over exaggerates
it was probably more like 50mph
-
My old mk3 16v was doing an indicated 156mph up the River Tay, unfortunately no sat nav at that time to confirm but -10% would be 140.4mph
But I suspect that the engine is perhaps not completely standard.
Mk2 16v has been up to around an indicated 115mph (private road) but as the tracking is wildly out which makes it a bit of a white knuckle ride at the mo'.
-
Ive hit 135 in a standard 16v.
I've hit a fat bird in bed.
-
they do 160 dont they? thats what the speedo goes up to
was watching top gear USA, tother day, the chubby guy was upset at an Aston Martin that had a speedo that went to 220, while the car only did about 180 iirc. He then decided that this sort of lies must be a British thing!
-
did a top speed run in the 8v last night with a 421 mani and full system and then engine has been bored out to 1.9L pulled off the clock (goes to 120) my mate used a gps speedo on his iphone and when topping out at about 124mph on the speedo it was actually doing 111mph, so the speedos aren't exactly accurate! aha
-
According to a Garmin Satnav I used to have i did manage to do 728mph in 2.5D Transit .
So satnav is not always accurate either.
-
I did 88mph once.
Then found myself in the wild west, so technically I travelled faster than time itself. The clocks on the dash were a little out though as it said I was doing 160mph.
-
Great Scot!
-
Where we're going we don't need roads...
-
Some years back my wife and I in our 8v Mk2 ended up neck and neck with a 16v Mk 2 on an autobahn heading to Netherlands. We smiled and the 'race' was on. With my speedometer needle crushed against the stop we watched as the 16v slowly (very slowly) pulled ahead of us at a rate of about 0.2 mph. The 'race' went on for many miles and by the time we hit the border he was 200yds in front. We both braked back to legal (Dutch) speeds.
I think it depends very much on the condition of the car.
-
It must do, as my 16v ruins an 8v from 30mph upwards. By the time the 8v has chugged from 90 to 110/120 (about 2days) I'd be out the country let alone 200yds ahead!!
-

That must've been a knackered 16v then....
-
Who Cares.....
It's a 20 Year Old Iconic Car - Look Cool Travelling Slowly - so peeps can see how good & it is to drive a classic rather than a heap of Tat like a MK3 or Mk4 :lipsrsealed:

Who Cares.....
True...

Hit me at 30, and there's an 80% chance I'll live.
Hit me at 40 and there's an 80% chance I'll die.
Hit me at 135 and there's an 80% chance my dismembered head will be in the front garden at the end of the road.

As ricky gervais said, that encourages gambling. If a kid is on an M or A road whilst you're doing 135 its the parents fault for no green cross code and letting them be there. My loud airbox on the kjet abf is my warning to children and animals etc, in 4 years I've only had the pleasure of smashing my windscreen into a pigeon at 70mph ish. Everything else gets the f**k out the way. Remember speed doesn't kill, its driver error. If pricks didn't pull out in front of speeding cars, by not judging speed or using their mirrors and being 'aware' then I think it should be them getting penalised. I don't see people dropping dead on autobahns all the time?!
-
apparently about 850 people die on autobahns every year mostly americans do americans have the green cross code

comenting on 2 threads at the moment this one and the mpg one so thought id try it out last night filled the tank up with fuel till it clicked on the pump set off at 12.30am zeroed my trip got to the a1 stuck it in 5th and floored it got to a indicated 135mph and kept driving the police volvo driver said it was a skilled bit of driving by the time id got to grantham the gage was registering a quarter of a tank im thinking only about 10 to11 miles left to go when some stupid american decides to walk across the a1 without looking splat what a mess so i stop and the copper runs up nearly pulls my door off and says do you know how fast you were going well i said aparently the speedos are slightly out on these golfs so im not to sure you were doing 80mph in a 70 next time take it a bit easier or you could hit some one important drive safe

.... and on that highly insightful and truthful commentary, we have come to the end of our story.
Please come again, and remember y'all.... look left, right, left again and cross.
