How do you get the pivot bolt out of the wishbone on the 1.4 drivers side? Theres only an inch gap if that between the bolt and the sump, is it a sump off job? seems a bit extreme just to change the wishbones the others all all so easy!
cheers
-
All should come out.
-
Thats what I thought, theres no mention of it in the haynes but theres definitely no way its coming out with the sump where it is, not sure whats going on
-
Got a picture? Id check on mine, but 1.8T is there now so different.
-
no pics as it isn't mine, 1.8t in mine also :P
Its a mates car been round his all day helping but it was just one problem after another, someone who worked on the car before him has done a number on pretty much every bolt we needed to undo, either rounded off or snapped. The only thing that wasn't knackered was the wishbone bolts but we cant get them off because of the sump, which we cant get off as one bolt snapped and one is rounded
managed to cut out one of the struts though
If I go round again in the next couple of days I'll get a pic
-
Sounds a nightmate. New bolts!!!
-
This a mk3? Im getting confused with a mk4!!! oops
-
Doh, get back to the mk4 section!
-
No chance the engine has dropped on it mounts :undecided:
-
How would I know if that had happened? all looked ok but wasn't sure what I was looking for tbh I've not worked on a 1.4 before

Any chance of a pic
-
why don't you just undo the engine mounts and jack the engine up?
-
Yeah Dan came round and we managed to do naff all, we'd start one thing and find round bolts done by someone else
Good thing is I found the top struts caps £6 a corner from TPS
Anyways here's a pic of the engnine blocking the wishbone bolt

Think the only way is as tweed says, take it off the mounts and lift the engine a bit.
Quick question, will I have to undo both the both the back and front mount or just the one of them?

back will do. But I would do front and back
-
Yeah pretty standard on all MK3's and Polo's (6n) with Polo engines to have to loosen the engine mount and jack the engine up.
Only a 13mm then a 15/16/17mm bolt IIRC.
Did mine a little while ago, the sumps sit back for some reason.
-
stupid ass design, as it was all so easy on my gti I figured there must of been something wrong. Not heard from him for a while so I guess its all going ok :P
-
Does anyone know what the bit circled below is?
It seems to be stuck to the brake caliper along with the rubber boot, but it looks like a metal sleeve?
Only reason I'm asking is I want to cut through this and the caliper bolt so I can get the caliper off.
Loosing patience with these seized bolt things, and having to do major workarounds. Should be so simples
thnx

this is the pic I meant to put up.

WTF are you trying to undo?
That's the slider, don't cut it.
On the back of the calliper there are two (7mm IIRC) allen key bolts, these are the bolt/slider (it's one piece) for the callipers. There is normally two end caps on, remove the end cap, undo the 7mm bolts and the calliper will come off.
The top slides out to the side then will lift straight off.
No idea what you're trying to undo as there aren't any carriers.......
-
I say have some fun and get a grinder out
-
the pic is of the top bolt, we got that one out pretty easily. the problem is the bottom one is totally rounded off the allen just spins in the hole. Its different to the gti setup, iirc that just needs 2 13mil spanners on it, this is 6mil allen
-
drill a hole in the center of bolt and use a outer

I'd advise smacking in a spline tool.
That's what I did when mine rounded.
Alternative is yeah, cut it and take it out with mole grips.
-
One of mine rounded off when I replaced my rears a couple of weeks ago. Managed to get it off with a set of Stilsons but ended up with blisters all over my hand and fingers though.:smiley:

^^
What he said, Stilsons.
-
Can't really get stilsons in there guys and is a hard thing for a drill.
Trouble is the bolt is sunk into a rubber sleeve so in as you mash that or try and pull it off you can't get them on it.
-
He cut the sleeve and gave it to an engineer guy to sort out, then bought a new sleeve for £5. sorted!
