hiya,
Was just after a bit of advice really, i have a 1991 big bumper mk2 gti 8v and i am replacing the wheels i have 17" bbs anniversary wheels on at the moment its been lowered but im not sure by how much, i do know however that it rubs slightly when i have full lock on ( the price you pay i know) i am changing to g60 steelies was thinking maybe 15". Would you recommend leaving it as low as it is or put the 15's on and lower more?,
The wheels i have on now are great just not really my style wanted a more retro look but i didnt want to put smaller wheels on and them look a bit lost as how it looks now is great but then it has that little rub and im thinking that 16" would be too big still?
I am torn between a few ideas and was really looking for advice from people that love dubs as much as i do,
Thanks for your help guys (any help at all i cant decide so someone do it for me!)
Cheers craig.

any rubbing when you dropped it 100mm on 15's?
so we are saying that 15's are the perfect fit and drop it 100mm?
its pretty low any way just not sure correct height.

Around 80 / 90 mm is the max for a daily use car.

Well I am getting old now hence why mine is standard height

Depends upon offsets and if you have coilovers as many people have scrubbing even from the suspension to the upper arches. I've always said its not low enough until you get scrubbing

No rubbing at all but I have done a lot of work to the arches. Don't think that would be necessary on et35 15s .

am on 15s and its dropped abit silly, not much room between subframe and floor, about 30mm, could wind here down a little more now am on 195s. but i have rolled and pulled archees

You mean bags are for groceries.
In fact they are for winners!!
With regarding how low can you lower a mk2, well, the floors the limit.

Low mk2's are a big no no if you use it daily.
G60 arches get a battering (not cheap) bumper splitters catch and end up breaking the bumper brackets (ball ache)
Exhausts fall off in the queens back garden, all sorts! :lipsrsealed:
Coilover threads are at the very end and I CBF to raise it and drive it now
Air is the way but bloody spensive!

I ran mine at about 100mm for 2 weeks and hated it. Slightly enthusiastic cornering would rub and it did my head in.
Its probably at about 60mm now (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=49436.msg1424821#msg1424821) - but even still, that's cutting it fine for speedbumps, kerbs and steep driveways!

I was running mine silly low (-100mm) on 16's. Purely because it looked the dogs danglies, however the flip side was scrubbing on full lock even though I've pulled the arches (need spacers). Used to catch the pavement when parking, beached it outside the hospital on their speedbumps, generally nasty to drive.
Raised it today about 80mm as part of "winter mode", I can now actually drive the car without worrying about how low it is.
To the OP general rule of thumb is so the wishbones are level with the ground, anything else is will compromise handling. That would be approx -60mm from stock ride height (-40mm on the 16v) Combine that with a decent set of tyres on 15's and it'll look good and go round corners. Try to get the lightest wheels you can too as unsprung weight makes a massive difference too.

That's pretty low, can't imagine it'd be much fun driving that around. Out of curiosity what size and offset are your BBS's?
