Not really, bare block and head is but all the rest is different.

what about the tranny?????the passats look like they have more power..the one i want to get is a 2l estate...really responsive..better than my golf really..i was surprised.

996 vw passat cl estate 2.0. So us it compatible?

Yes from memory 1996 was transverse, I was thinking of the later cars.
