Title: Wheel Spacers
Post by: CM690 on 20 October 2011, 20:26
I want to give my mk3 a bit more stance, so I thought about getting some wheel spacers. I'm using 13" steels but I was gonna go for an odd colour and centre cap combination. What spacers would you recommend I go for? I wanted the wheels to stick out from the arches a tiny bit so it sits better

Are these things safe? Likely to cause me any problems?

Should I go for just the back wheels or all round? Not sure as I've never done anything like this before

Thanks guys!

Get a tape measure and look how far out you want to go from where your wheel is currently. I think anything over about 25mm will put alot of stress on your bearings.

Yeah I wasn't gonna go bigger than 20mm I'd say otherwise it'd probably be far too much  :undecided:

Any part of the tyre outside the arch is illegal and will fail the mot.

It all depends entirely on the offset of the wheels? You want to get them flush with the arches but as already mentioned if they stick out then expect to get a ticket.

I'd make sure you use high quality spacers with the correct bolts. If you're going any bigger than 15mm then you also need to use hubcentric spacers.

another thing to consider is how low are you running? My old mk3 (on 15's but low) had 12mm spacers (6mm a side) and the arches rubbed

Only illegal if the tyre tread is on show the rim can be, ie use stretch.13s on a golf look stupid even down 120mm theres still loads of arch gap. I'm running 16s et32 on a 20mm spacer, but going up to 35mm on the rear. All depends on the et, to get it flush or slight pike uou need an et of aboit 0 after you've added the spacer, so either have a wheel with an et of about 20 or a bigger spacer
