Title: winter tyres and rim sizes
Post by: 55cookie on 20 October 2011, 13:30

Hello, I have a set of 205/55/16 winter tyres as recommended in the manual, question being can i fit 16" alloys to my 55 plate gti or is it only steel wheels that fit.

Cheers

Alloy wheels will fit fine providing they have the correct offset and stud pattern

Look for 2nd hand wheels on forums and Ebay for ones fitted to the MK5 Golf, Seat Leon or Audi A3 as they will bolt directly on

No probs.  I should add that it the Leon and A3 need to be wheels from 2004 models onwards as the stud pattern is different prior to this  :nerd:

It's not clear to me what size rims I should have for my winter tyres. Even VW seem happy to just put winter tyres on my 18" Monzas but I see you have 16". Is that really the recommended size? Does size really matter? How about a 17" compromise?

I found 16's are more plentiful and cheaper than 17's so went for them

But do I HAVE to use different wheels? It is not ok just to put winter tyres on my existing 18's?

Do what you want   Me, personally, I like to save my 18's from the harsh winter and just use some cheap 2nd hand alloys to get me about

If you've got original finish Monza's then all the salt and road grit is not good for their long term health
