If the rust is not to deep you can remove the rust then refill with body filler and sand down to finish should check youtube for some how to videos

your car reminds me of how my old GL started out

It is pretty badly rusted on the arch of the driver side.. may have to get a new side panel but ill check the videos on youtube to see how badly the rust can be and still be fixed up.

Covering over any rust you dont manage to eradicate with plastic covers will only make things worse!
If its really bad be best to get a new wing.
The Gti plastic trims are naff anyway!

I would leave the GTI arches off, they look better without them.

Which arches have the rust? If it's on the front wings then get them replaced. If it's the rear quarters then you want to cut it out and weld. As long as you have the rust out that's the main thing. If the paint job is pants then you can just cover it up with the GTI Trim.

its just the front ones, the right is really bad and left is also bad but nowhere as near as bad as driver side.

it will look sh!tty unless wings are re-sprayed IMHO.  Yes front wings just un-bolt and re-bolt, its easy enough really.

look on my blog as I did wings last year I think.
