Has anyone tried a remote start? I've always fancied one, to give the Golf a pre warm in the bitter winters.
Thoughts and reasons?

honestly i think this is an amazing idea. and would deffo like a guide if you end up doing it!

lol to be fair would love to look out the window see cold cold ice and start her up :-D be even better if my thermostat got to temp and the heaters worked !! :wink:

the clifford i had for insurance had the remote start could even put the hood up on my bmw i had last year

Don't think it can be done on a mk4 due to the immob also I believe they are illegal thesedays.

Really? A lad i work with has a late 2010 plate car with it? Or has it became illegal in the last year.
also what would happen if you left the car in gear would it not start it or would you be chasing your car down the street :grin:

had one of these on my toyota silly-car and it was the nuts for the winter, so toasty and windows defrosted for when i got in!!!
think you would be able to put it on just have to bypass the immobiliser (or get the chip out of the spare key and tape it inside the dash next to the ignition hole) always ways to get around things :grin:
oh and i started it once with it in gear but think the hand brake was so good it didnt drive up the road!!!!!

It should have a switch fitted so it will not work if left in car.

No as the way they work is they start with the car locked. When you open the door, the engine stops.

my mate has it on his bmw e30 we,ve caught a few people out with it :grin:
we did it outside a takeaway once we was in shop over the rd people were scratching there heads lookin in the car for some1 haha

what i normally do is get up a little earlier, get dressed, have a cuppa, then go out about 5 mins earlier and start the car with the transponder key that i usually keep in my pocket. while the car is running with the blowers on i scrape off all the frost.
preperation is always the key too..

how ever ive been told that this can increase wear and tear on the engine due to the oil not splashing enough on idle?
Can you lock the doors with the engine on? Ie start the car with spare key lock it witg other key and have a brew?

Watched this on telly the the other day, bloke had remote start on his van and started whilst walking up to it. It started but had left it in gear and pinned himself against a wall and broke his leg. So basically ran himself over lol

Its a nice idea. Even better if you could rev remotely VRUOOOOMMM PSHHHHHH Next to some random person whilst in the takeaway. :grin:
Someone at work mentioned a turbo timer to me. I didn't know they were illegal whys this?
Edit: I just looked it up. I guess they are illegal for the same reason remote start is. Due to the fact there is no driver behind the wheel. Its dangerous. But i'm guessing a turbo timer could be used as part of a remote start.

I don't think any of it is legal as you're not meant to have a running car with nobody in it.

wouldnt it already be void as there would be remote start on it anyway?!?!?! :tongue:

I don't think any of it is legal as you're not meant to have a running car with nobody in it.
Correct, leaving a car running without being in it is illegal on a public road however not sure if that still applies if the car is on your own drive.
Also (off topic) what is the point of a turbo timer, just drive the last mile or so off boost, it is all I have ever done.

It's for those jap boys mainly with big ass turbos that get hotter than the sun i'm guessing? Not much use on a MK4 :grin:

Its not illegal it just makes a thatcham cat 1 alarm void.. if it was illegal why would people like toad and clifford sell them think about it.. They are very good and cut out as soon as someone opens a door or triggers the interior sensors so are still quite safe.. no need to bypass the immob

On a mk4 you will need to bypass the immob or else it will not start. :smiley:
Someone on the Skoda forum was asking about a turbo timer on a vRS and he had the same problem.

As said earlyer in the thread it can be done but when ive fitted these to cars ive always cut the spare key to pieces to get the chip out and then glued it to the ignition barrel,these should only be fitted to auto cars but ive just made customers sighn disclaimers :wink: .
It is however a good idea to check its not in gear as ive seen 2 cars kangarooing down the street outside my work and put my rs turbo in to a wall outside the pub one night :laugh: :laugh: funny but lucky for me no damage and know one run over.
