Hi,
could do with some advice on my 1999 1.8 turbo gti. its developed a problem at idle. had it to a few garages and they have suggested quite a list of things that could be wrong with it but i cant afford to fix everything they think it could be!!
when i stop at traffic lights or i rev and let off the revs drop really low as if its going to cut out (its never cut out) does this for a few seconds up and down then goes back to normal, apart from that the car seems to drive fine doesnt seem very sluggish to me but my other car was a 1.4 8v pug so anything will feel responsive to me! The garage says it could be something to do with the blow off valve and have suggested i buy an uprated part from forge motorsports but they say it could maybe be the mass air flow sensor? although im getting about 36mpg would i still be getting good mpg with a faulty sensor?
spoken to vw who think it could be the throttle body causing the propblem. oh and also the car wont start unless i hold my foot on the accelarator if i dont do this the car will start and then cut out almost straightaway..anyone got any ideas as to what could be going on?
Thanks! Ellie

Thanks for that I'll take a look at the mk4 bit  Goin to attempt cleaning the throttle body this weekend cars done 130k n prob never had it cleaned so that could be the place to start.. Think I'm guna try find someone local who has vagcom n hopefully they'll have a look as vw want £65 to plug it in which is shocking! Going to order that part from forge n hopefully that'll be it sorted don't really want to part with the golf but can't keep throwing money at it
