Title: 02A Starter motor help please
Post by: Gloves88 on 16 October 2011, 20:23
I have a Diesel ASD 02A gearbox on a mk4 20vt engine.

Will any 02A starter fit? Or are the diesel and petrol gearboxes different?

Cheers

Thanks Dan.

Can anyone confirm? 02A gearbox knowledge seems to be a bit of a dark art

I thought someone would of answered this by now its usually pretty good in here :P

I have the DPA box on my 20vt which was using what I think iwas a 16v starter, had a search and couldn't find much but I found this which might be useful

Quote
the starter I took appart is a diesel starter, gasser should be the same. They are interchangealbe but a gas starter on a diesel will prolly die soon after as they are not designed for such high compression engines.

The best upgrade you can do to a gasser is swap the entire gas starter for a diesel starter. They are much more powerful but they weight a TON, which might offset it's advantages.

I did replace my starter not long ago and the new one I got from ecp when I asked for a 16v mk3 one did look different to the one I replaced, new one was a Lucas one (the more expensive one they do)

It looked like this, the pic is the diesel starter from the same thread I got the quote from and as it looks the same as my new 16v so I'd guess they are all the same?

Hope this helps in some way :P
