Hmmmm,
When I was growing up the MK2 was at its peak!! I loved it but then when I passed my test the MK3 was about although at the time people always said to MK2 was better, but the VR6 kicked ass.
Then the MK4 came out and it was my first Golf. Great car but when my company car came along I had to sell it and had some spare cash. It was then a toss up between the MK1 2 and 3... After speaking to a MK1 enthusiast I decided to try and find one but there were hardly any decent ones around for less than £1500.
Thats when I found my MK2 16 valver... £700 and it is awesome for handling.
So... its not a question of whats the better car, just what do people prefer???
-
voted for mk2 as even though i havent got one at mo (mk4 driver ) lol, they are the best off the bunch, ive had more than you can shake a stick at, 16v's rock............

-
i voted mk1, even tho i got a 4.
Mk1 is the law
-
it was a toss up between the mk1 and the mk2 when i was looking for a golf, i love the look of the mk2 when it has those G60 arches but as you can see i went for the mk1! and i love it!

I had to really though didnt I. But it is my honest opinion, those who have driven one for any amount of time will know why.
-
old cars are far better than new cars
i voted mk2, only because there wasnt a valver mk1 (i know the oettinger one but what are the chances of finding one)

Better to have a barge than mk1 with no brakes

I was reading before at work that the mexicans are currently running the mk1's / rabbits on vegetable oil, something to bear in mind corrin in case a petrol strike occurs again
-
i thought that was what JET sold as petrol!! lol

Better to have a barge than mk1 with no brakes
But the mk1 one can go into the corner quicker then

unless you have a fuel leak and slip on your vegetable oil

IMHO the true essence of the Golf GTI stopped after the mk2.
My Mk2 valver was a great all round motor, but for me the retro style and rawness of the mk1 outweighs the all round performance of the mk2 (just).
-
what a load of bollox
-
what is a loads of bollox corrin?
-
golf gti not existing after the mk2.
the mk3 16v isn't alot slower than the mk2 16v.
the 1.8T is quicker.
and as for the gti diesel, that pisses all over mk1 and mk2 gti's
so as for the brand dying after mk2's, i don't think so, thats not even including the vr6 and the v6 4 motion/R32
-
mk3 all the way
Especially in Tornado Pink

MKII for me to. The MKI was a bit too basic, drove my dads MKIII VR6 awesome in a straight line but even with a decnt suspension upgrade was pretty poo around the twisties. Not driven a MKIV GTI but have driven a BORA 1.9 TDI (again my dads) and quite licked that but as it had the sprt setup on it but still not as good as the MKII. LOve to drive a MKV Gti but the local stealership didn't want to let me :-(

Calm down guys!
Since when does my favourite golf have to relate to the fastest Golf!
If all I wanted from a car was speed, I'd go and buy myself a Scooby!
I own a V6 4-Motion myself, but leave that for the wife, as I get more enjoyment from driving the Mk1. It's also a hell of a lot cheaper to run and has been much more reliable.
Old Skool rules!

-
cheers for doing the poll!!!
The MK2 is on 25 and mk1 on 20... Maybe it is just a reflection of the age of most people on this site and/or the amount of MK2's available compared to MK1's
