over the last couple of weeks the car has occasionally jerked a bit under half throttle, thought it was to do with the gearbox as it's going... but last night as i was driving up to some traffic lights the engine just cut out, then couldn't get it started again (was turning over but not firing), 2 lads helped me push it back into a carpark, then i tried to start it again and it fired up at the first turn of the key! :S
then on the way home after about 10miles it suddenly wouldn't accelerate properly at all, was like driving against something, had to keep taking my foot on and off the power to coast it home the last 4 miles, does anyone know what this could be? it wasn't as if the car was underpowered, but more as if i was trying to pull something ridiculously heavy and the more i put my foot down the more it struggled... if i engaged the clutch and revved the engine it revved up freely as if nothing was wrong at all...
any help much appreciated :undecided:

is it misfiring check leads coil plugs dizy etc

it's not misfiring i don't think, definately doesn't sound like it!
dizzy was replaced recently with a genuine vw part, spark plugs are new, it doesn't seem to do it until it's up to temperature...
it's an 8v digi btw

So, possibly blue temp sender problem? Anyone with a digi near you to try a swap?

do vw still stock blue temp senders?

just tried running her and unplugging all the sensors to see if any of them didn't make a difference...when removed all of them made the car behave differently i.e rev higher or cut out, except the black sensor in front of the blue temp sender, what is this sensor? as i'm guessing it's had it as it has no effect on the running of the car...

Black one is temperature gauge only, so won't affect running.
VW surely still sell the blue one, but I'd not be completely happy for you to spend your cash on the basis of my speculation, without some testing.
There are graphs online of resistance versus temperature for this beast, so dig one out and do some measuring if you can't borrow a known good'un.

when i removed the blue sender when cold it killed the engine, then after a few minutes of idling when i removed it all it did was drop the idle down a bit, but not much... does it sound like it's running correctly? i'm fairly new to working on cars :rolleyes: aha

cut out and wouldn't start tonight, got the aa out, turns out the contact on the rotor arm is bent, so gonna get that sorted tomorrow and she'll be as good as new! :D

ive been having the same problem as you, changed the rotor arm dizzy cap and leads works better but i still get intermitent times where it runs like sh!t so going to change my distributor :)

the dizzy on mine is new, changed the rotor arm and was also a dodgy connection to the coil pack, sorted that too
and just invested in some 10mm high energy ultra low resistance leads and iridium plugs
