Just having a quick look to see whats out there and come across the new 3 series...
http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=24530
Must say the 328i with a 2.0 turbo would make the GTI look pretty slow in comparison
and the 335i makes the R seem very pricey :lipsrsealed:
All with the power coming out the correct 2 wheels!

Enjoy the winter in a big wheeled cortina

Mmmmmmmmm Dirty BMW RWD love

Trouble is they look like somthing a grandad would buy, as always for or a nice looking one add another few K to those prices for the M spec models.

I am one, but would not buy one. Looks frumpy.

Must be the colour

Nix cars but price wise they are not in the same bracket as you'll need to add the extras on top taking the price of two about five Brownmore.
If you think the above doesn't make sense, I've just just told Siri on my iPhone 4S to type this reply :nerd:

this is very true! although i have to say it looks alot nicer initially than the (last 3 series) pictures of the base spec they release. So once this comes in m sport guise I am sure it will look alot nicer.
Back to the figures tho...
the bmw will give you 245bhp, 350nm, 0-62 in just 5.9 secs and still return a combined mpg of 44.1 mpg!!!
Compared with the VW
the golf will give you 210bhp, 280nm, 0-62 in just 6.7 secs and provide a combined return of 38.7 mpg.

More on the new 3 Series:

New baby Jag.....

Surely these cars (3 series; Jag etc) didn't used to be considered to be competition to the Golf. I know the quality of the Golf is up there to compare but shouldn't they be compared other hatch sized cars?

I think the comparison is being made as the prices are similar VW need to get real about prices or lose sales to higher quality & faster cars.

Ahh I see, wow yes you can get a lot more for similar money. It is daft of VW to pitch at the top end of the price scale as that's what they have Audi for. I think everyone except VW think the Golf in its various models is a car for the masses.
Still its nothing new with what VW are doing pricewise. When my VR Corrado was new, it cost £22k which I've been told in todays money equates to £35k now! They didn't sell many at that price!

What will bring them back to earth will the Golf sized Jag when it comes out in two years.

So we are comparing a £29000 3 series with a £25000 Golf, one a hatchback and the other a four door saloon.
The 320i will probably be priced about the same as the GTI and I would take the GTI everytime.
If I was in the hunt for sporty hatchback the last thing I would be looking at would be a four door saloon.
-
The thing is for me i test drove bmw's and audis and they look fantastic, they look twice money of the gti but when i drove them they were dull (except 330 and up). Its easy to knock the gti and the price when you have one and say im going to get this and that next but when the mk7 comes out i bet most will end up back in a Golf because it just a great alrounder.

This is true Mike, the actual cars shouldn't be compared but the prices and the fact you don't have to wait 7 months for delivery make the GTI seem very poor value.

-
Yea the waiting time is a bit of a joke which is why I ended up buying a 3 month old dealer car and then adding on the extras myself
Currently you can get about £2k of a new GTI, you'll be lucky to get a free umbrella with the BMW
So the BMW is about £7k dearer, makes it look a bit expensive
-
The BMW is more of a rival for a Jetta or Passat really and you can pick those up for peanuts.
-
I think the early 3 series will be a massive seller as usual... the reason for this will be down to the efficiency of their engines. To have a 2.0T 245bhp 3 series that returns 45mpg!!
The 335i at £35k makes the Golf R look very expensive also. You will always have people that dont like the look of the 3 series but once you sit in a new one, there is no denying its a class above the golf period. Although many of the boy racers may disagree with this, the power comes out of the correct wheels
-
I agree with Gilly. There is no way I would spend upwards of £26-27K on a Golf when the 3 series is that price. And that Jag just looks gorgeous. Maybe when I was in my 20s I might have been tempted by the Golf but now in my 40s I suspect this will be my last Golf. The prices for them are just ridiculous.
-
And even though people go on about having to add options to the BM, don't forget a new GTi still doesn't even get you cruise control, for example, or a decent stereo.

Thats a good point andy! Just to mention there is also an AWD 3 series out soon for all those that dislike RWD in winter.
Just keep hold of that mk2 andy!!

+ 1, you ever seen a BMW driving up a hill in snow & Ice?

it must snow like 2 x a year on average... and give you a great excuse for a couple of days of work or to work from home. its a win win
p.s. the GTI isnt much better judging by the number of people on here fitting winter tyres
-
If you're that bothered about the winter get an old R32 and a 3 series. Win win again.
-
It depends were you live but it snowed more than that here last year and years before. It snowed quite regular from around the 20th nov to beginning of march last year. If i don't make it into work i don't get paid and if someone not far from me makes it in an i don't all hell breaks loose. (even if they come by a company car they don't give two hoots about#!) The joys working for a company based at sea level with an MD that live near work with a decent city council unlike some of us who are on the border of two councils 312 metres above sea level and so get little to no help from the council as were too near the borders.
Most the BMWs round my area have gone now replaced by 4x4s or Audis as the owners seemed to have learned from last year even after most of them panic bought winter tyres at the end of last year they still got stuck.

or how about.... drum rolll pleaseeeeeeee......

Hideous! I'd rather walk than have one of them!!!
-
I don't use my golf when it snows so it would make no odds if I had fwd or tbh.
The other 345 days I'll have rwd (or 4wd) permagrin
-

Not the best looking car I have to agree... the same kit in a polo would be nice!
-
I think this may get VW to speed up the mk7 gti a little... sounds like some has been doing their homework in zeerrmany

I'll probably get murdered for saying this but that is a seriously smart looking car. The last VXR was the one car I nearly bought instead of my GTi. It was an absolute hoot to drive but I thought the Golf was a better overall ownership package.
Having now had a GTi I could be really tempted by that Astra come change time, especially with a 100 000 mile warranty which the tight bar-stewards at VW are never going to offer.
I'll now go and take cover and wait for the slaggings to arrive!!!!
-
I likey
-
Have to admit its a good looking car with out too many shouty bits like the previous astras. That is a serious bit of kit for the money you have to say. :lipsrsealed:
.. but will it convert some of the badge snobs on here? i doubt it. Would I buy one? I doubt it also*
* wouldnt mind one for a couple of months to destroy though
-
Badge snobbery gets you nowhere - it just ends up in disappointment when a car isn't as good as you expected it to be.
