Incase you have nothing better to do, BBC3 are showing the entire season of Top Gear USA starting tonight at 7pm. It actually looks alright from the trailer and might make a change from the Clarkson/Hammond/May banter.
Looks like they had a good budget too.

And because they cannot the UKs Mira test track to check the cars out they use a local town lass.

been watching it and it just isn't the same. They recently had a Hollywood car themed episode where they had $2000 to buy a car and mod it to look like a famous car from TV or film. The premise sounds like a laugh but it wasn't that great.
They are currently showing the second series over in the states.

It's like the Aussie version. If you've seen the original then others seem like a pale imitation. Why not simply make more uk episodes?

I think you'll find it was 45min, ie 1hr of commercial channel TV. But that does water it down.
Watched it yesterday, I'll probably watch the other episodes to see if it gets better. I think they've tried to jump in and emulate British Top Gear as it current is, without having gone through the evolution that happened over the first couple of series.
Why not simply make more uk episodes?
Because there's no more money to make more than they currently make.
Would you like to pay more for your TV licence ? Don't think so. The cost of the TV licence has been frozen (unlike many other bills we pay) and so there's only so much the BBC can do with the money.
Top Gear's budget is essentially frozen and with costs going up (with inflation etc) they had to decide, either a) make the same number of episodes or more, but spend less on each one, or b) spend the same amount on each episode making better quality episodes and make a shorter series.
If they'd gone with the former option (a) then everyone would be complaining about a drop in quality.
Top Gear is a marmite thing anyway, either you like it or you don't. Same with imported versions.
I'll watch it (the US version) if I'm bored and to see how they evolve.

I watched the 1st episode before work yesterday and quite liked it.
I love Yankee motors especially the classic50-80's so I'm looking forward to seeing if they do any banger for a grand type challenges, just to see the cars.
I've left 15gb of the 1st and 2nd series downloading while I finish work so I can watch a few more before I go to bed for a couple of hours.
