Title: MFA only works for a short time
Post by: Mk2Gti8v on 19 September 2003, 12:01
Hi, im new to the forum (normally on porka.net, but have just purchased a mk2 GTI as i wanted a car with a bit more power than my mk4 1.4 8v polo), but i have a problem with the MFA on my '91 GTI (Who dosen't) the mfa works for about 5-10 seconds then goes dead again. is this symptomatic of an knackered MFA of just a loose connection? If it is a connection where should i be looking?

It  will work for 5-10 seconds when driving that go dead and then work again for a bit and go dead again, the clock works all the time, and during the 5-10 seconds it dose work all the funcions work fine (the mpg and ave speed show --- but i assume thats because they don't have enough data to give an average)

I have the same car, I had the same probs. Tried leaving the battery off for an hour, which worked for while. In the end I sent the entire board (which also drives the rev counter) to a bloke called DIGIDASH, I will have to dig out the number. He replaces some bits on the board. It cost about ?100 ! but it has worked fine for nearly two years. This can only be done on big bumper cars (post '90) and the clock must still display time. You can buy the board from VW for about ?250 which will last about 7 years. Early cars used VDO units which I have been told were more reliable than MOTOMETER. Numbe r to follow. Tim

replace the voltage regulator on the back on the board yourself, bout ?6 from GSF

if this still fails then its probably cheaper to source a set of 2nd hand clocks, u can pick them up for ?50

Is this a possible fix for a non working speedo/mfa? My clock just shows 00:00 . i have left the fuse out all night and it still doesn't work.

Cheers
