Title: The Unofficial ''ideal for mk6 winters thread''
Post by: Exonian on 13 October 2011, 16:27
Lots of people on here doing a last minute scrabble round looking for winter wheels before the snow falls and the couriers can't deliver your 'new' wheels to you so you can't use 'em anyway.
16'' and 17'' wheels go for about 50p in the summer but suddenly hit new highs in the autumn during panic buy season.

So here's a thread for potential 'bargains' people discover on their travels that they may wish to share.
I won't put any mega expensive ones in here as you can easily find those yourselves if you want brand new wheels, but feel free to put whatever you want in here.
It'll probably get dumped somewhere by a global before long but don't say I didn't try!!

Take out the Leon centre caps and stick some VW ones in (may require a bit of silicone to sit them in there tightly) and re-use your black nut covers. I ran a set of these on my mk5 GT TDI temporarily whilst I was waiting for another set to be refurbished. Need spacers to look good though.

I wouldn't be buying those fantastic looking vancouver 17"s look a likes,

Delivery :
International: Not offered

You would have to drive all the way to Italy to collect.

It says merely that they don't offer Postal Insurance for International postage but a courier would provide insurance cover if paid for extra.

Postage won't be cheap though! As they are replicas I have a feeling they could be WSP alloys who are imported into the UK by Performancealloys.com although I can't see that design on their website.

So the wheels that are quoted as being for EOS, Passat and scirocco http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/260869153832?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649, would they fit the Golf.

Unable to pick out the difference other than a bigger back axle and more space in the arches.

The offset is 39mm on those Herr_F so won't be any good for the front of the Golf. You could squeeze them on the rear but not the front. As you say, no room under the arches.

Thanks Boys and girls, purchased some new 17" VW Jetta Activa alloys off fleabay and shall be booting them with Vredestein Wintrac xtreme 225/45 R17 94H XL with rim protection.

Rims: £430 (including postage)
Tyres: £587.20
Total: £1017

Tad over the £1k budget, but think I'm overall happy with the purchase.

Note: Within the last two days of looking online sellers have pushed up prices by £15/each on these vred's, and doubled the price of the Michelin Aplin A4's for this tyre size.  Roll on winter next week!

This is far better than VW's offering:

Complete set of Meribel Alloys with Dunlop tyre - 205/50 R17 93V XL SP Winter Sport 4D

Fully fitted £1355.00 inc vat

or £1328.00 inc vat supply only.

or

a set of winter tyres fitted to your existing wheels, I have priced up Goodyear although Dunlop, Firestone and Bridgestone may also be available.
Goodyear: ULTRA GRIP PERFORMANCE 2 MS. Tyre size: 225/40/18 92V. Extra load: XL.)
£905.32 inc VAT

So mytyres got my business and I purchased some TS 830 P's from some happy chappy's from (H / ')ull!

Has anyone actually used these on Monza Shadows? i have thought about getting a set but i'm a little worried that they'll scratch the polished surface of the wheel. :undecided:

Rolfe did a review on them last winter and was in favour of them, if you have a look through her posts of which there have been none of late? you should come across it.

I used them last year and they were great, different manufacturer, These Ones (http://www.rockshore.uk.com/snow-tyre-socks-by-multi-grip-269-p.asp)
No problems with the rims getting marked though a pain to put on and off which is why I have invested in winter tyres this year.
I had to use them for two weeks as it was impossible to get to my house without them.
