Hi guys,
My brother drives a MK4 golf and the garage has told him the cambelt needs changing!!
The car is an S Reg, 1.6 SE and has done 51K miles? I think its seems quite soon and the guy might just be after more money.
Any idea's
Cheers

im in the same situation ive been told that it 60k or 5 years which ever is sooner so maybe best getting it done cos i am

Don't ever scrimp on a cambelt change, when it needs changing do it otherwise there may be trouble ahead and the bill for the timing belt (and tensioner) change is cheaper than the damage a snapped one causes. T1 VDUB, tell your brother to get the timing belt tensioner changed at the same time.

60k mate. No need to do it any sooner. Maybe the guy at the garage is a bit blind and thought it was a Ford or something?
-
Cheers guys... I will tell him to leave it another 10K
-
I always change timing belts at 40k.
-
I was warned by my garage that at 54k my belt needed changing.I too was advised that 60k+ is normal but did,nt wanna take that chance.
-
Dont know about age but vw say 70k for cambelt, I got it done at 66k on my last mk4 as the service was due
-
Just get it done before it snaps
-
I'm having mine done bext week as i've just clocked 60k
-
Out of interest how much does it cost (on average) to get it changed?

VW stealership told me 120k on mine, I always stick to 50-60kk to be safe, the cost is justifiable when you consider the the cost if it snaps.
