What you running? and on what phone?
I've been a fan of HTC Sense since I got my phone, but like ability to have more customizability than stock and don't see why I should install another launcher and disable Sense when I can have a regularly updated ROM. HTC do fail at keeping their older phones updated with the latest Sense, though they don't really need it as any version of Sense is good and well polished.
I'm running stock Cyanogenmod 7.1 with customized theme, fresh out the oven. Got to love a 2 minute download of ~70Mb and 5 minutes to flash it, boot it and restore your apps
-
That's stock android  It is a bit sh!t, did you get the upgrade earlier this year?
See:

and find a ROM you like

Try it in another computer and with a different cable, could be the USB drivers, I had that on my Windows 7 PC after f@cking about with the drivers for my phone when hacking it
-
I run Oxygen 2.3.1 on my Desire. I'm waiting for the final 2.3 before I do a fresh start as I'm in need of space. I think next time I'm going to run HBOOT and S-OFF and do a partition so I can have more internal storage.

You want to give your mate a slap
-
If you're lucky you could clean it out, not sure what you could use to get in there are it's a small hole the micro-usb's :undecided:
-
HTC Wildfire with the most recent version of Sense HTC released for it. I like it. I can't be arsed looking at other ROMs for it as Sense works just fine. Not got many apps but do have some stuff to sync with iTunes over WiFi on my mac which is dead good.

I am running the 7 Linux Rom V5.4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1067016
With the Galaxian Kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1137595
Running on the Galaxy S
These run really well together, giving me fast and stable performance.
In the quadrant standard benchmark test, my phone now comes up to 2202 , before I flashed it with the above Rom and Kernel , I was only getting 850
-
Im not trying to start a debate here just a question about rooting. These ROMs, could there be added malware unknowingly attached?
-
Could be, that's why you only use those from well known sources (such as Cyanogen, who now works for Samsung).
It's like trusting whoever writes the jailbreaks for iOS, they could slip in some malware without you knowing.
There are Chinese roms available, but I wouldn't trust them as they are rife with malware
-
Jay. Cyanogen or Oxygen? I'm not sure whether to try Cyanogen as I've heard it's very good.
-
Oxygen isn't available for the Legend afaik, take a ClockworkMod backup/TiB of your ROM and give Cyanogen a go. It's one of the most developed ROM's (if not the most) and running 2.3.7 which was only released 19 days before CM7.1 - that's how quick they work!

is there an easy way to do this? my galaxy s is over 12 months old and needs something to freshen it up.

how to root the SGS (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728754)
Not sure if it's changed since 2.2 or 2.3 (which ever you have on the SGS now)

Since moving the wifes HTC Wildfire to CyanogenMod 7.1 her battery life has gone from 13 hours with use to 50% after 13 hours with use  Probably down to crap she had installed, but it's quicker and smoother to use than what it was so she's happy and I'm happy there is one less thing she moans about
My Legend is sitting @ 66% left after 13 hours with use, also running CM7.1
Use = Wifi and sync on all the time on both phones, also includes calls, texts, facebook, web browsing and other apps so pretty chuffed!
-
so lets say i use the automated root as its easier, how do i then install a rom?
-
Noob question coming up.
whats a rom? Read only memory are you talking about? And whats the advantage of running one/editing whats on there?

Warning: Dragons Ahead!

Either from Recovery or a program such as Rom Manager, but make sure you've backup your sh!t, I recommend using the backup provided by the Recovery program (usually backs up the entire ROM, Apps, Data etc etc) and also make a backup using something like Titanium or MyBackup Pro so you can easily restore your apps and data after installing a new ROM. I can't stress the backing up of your sh!t enough. I made the mistake of not backing it all up when I originally rooted and flashed a new rom, loosing countless hours of progress on Angry Birds  My fault though for thinking it would remember where I got too automatically

ROM's in the Android world are essentially different versions of Android, different user interfaces (compare HTC Sense with Samsungs TouchWiz etc) they also all make tweaks here and there and do things a little different to eachother. The most popular is CyanogenMod which has grown at an immense rate and supports the majority of popular devices!

Just about to put Cyanogen on my Desire. :)
-
You may also want to look at Oxygen if you don't get along with CM, Khare really rates it.
I'm going to give a few other ROM's a go, there is Blayo's (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866849)which is based on the Legend's Sense but modified and looks ace, hasn't been updated for a while but meh it's based on a ROM that was released by HTC almost a year ago and there is the kitchen too cook up any other tasty mods (circle battery mod for the notification bar is one I love!)
RC4B (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987251) based on a newer version of Sense also looks good.

Cheers just halfway through doing it with Unrevoked.
Having MASSIVE issues as for some reason my phone will do the "device connected" noise then disconnect and reconnect.
So far as it's rebooting I've pulled out USB, waited for the phone to fully load then plugged it back in. Working so far.....
-
CHEERS DONE THE UNREVOKED FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!
Massive tip, un install any apps you've installed before rooting. AFTER BACKING THEM UP OBVIOUSLY. Just payed the 3 squid for MyBackup Pro.
I THINK the apps on my phone were cocking up unrevoked as it was going straight into Sync mode (as it should) before the phone loaded fully and was messing up. Carefully pulling the cable at the right time did it. Phew!
-
All you should have had to do is change it to be on Charging only and set it as the default so when you plugged it in it was only on charging and wouldn't mount the SD card as a USB drive, at least that's how I did with with the Wifes Wildfire and mothers Desire S.
-
Could only get it to work in USB Sync mode. :undecided:
Perhaps one of the Windows drivers wasn't right?
Certainly explains the issue though. Oh well just backing up using Clockwork. Cheers.
-
Happy with Cyangen so far.
Gonna be playing with it soon. Just installing the Google apps so I can use market. Probably try and delete the apps I don't use though.
-
As Jay said, I really like Oxygen as it's simple and minimal. The only thing I've got against it is that since AdamG (the developer) got a galaxy S2 he's slowed down the rate at which he used to update it, but when big releases come out he does add them to Oxygen.
-
Cyanagen is awesome.
Miles faster, battery has lasted all day and I've been using it MORE then normal. Normally it would be dead at about 2:30PM.
-
Since CM7.1 my battery has been utter sh!te! pretty much flat at/before bed time with minimal usage trough the day  Even blatted the phone and used only a stock CM7.1 with NO additional apps and it was just as bad
Went onto Blayo 0.8.4 and had that running almost 6 hours now with wifi on and battery has resumed it's normal longevity, 100% still with some usage and 5 mins call ealier and wifi on all the time with all syncs on.
It's MUCH better than when I lasted used it and SO fast  and all the cool HTC sense stuff too :afro:
-
After nearly 24 hours, with normal usage (couple calls, texts, internet and some apps), wifi on for the whole time and some 3G I've still got 75% left and my wifi signal is muchos better (seeing as it uses the HTC hardware drivers)
42% left after 48hours off charge  Wifi on, calls, texts, web browsing, 3G on when out. Doing farking good I'd say  Christ if I switched wifi, sync and location services off I'd probably have a lot more left!
-
Never heard of Blayo, sounds pretty impressive. Might have to try it.
-
'tis only for the Legend (unless he's done a Desire version), it's just a modified HTC Sense 2.2 Rom.
He's sped it up god knows how, changed the font and slipped in the Circle battery mod and some other graphical changes. I used an earlier version which was good, but not this good. It makes CM look slow!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866849
Still got 30% charge left, so could easily last until 36 hours or more off 1 charge! But I'm going to charge it up tonight as might be going on an unplanned trip tomorrow
Just set minimum underclock to 122Mhz and max to 806Mhz - will see what the battery life is like with those settings, I'm hoping a bit better as it should be underclocked most of the time and only raise to 806Mhz when it's needed.
-
phone has been off charge for almost 2 and a half days and still had 58% left after making a few changes here and there to manage battery life a bit more
