I have a 16v mk2 golf and am doing a full service again so what oil and filter should I use I have been told synta silver from vw is good?

Thats the stuff to use mate, highly recommended for dubs. Make sure you get a genuine oil filter too, they have two valves, a non-return to stop the oil flowing back down to the sump when the engine is off (stops the hydralic tappets, tapping at startup :)) and a filter bypass, so you still get oil flow to the engine if the element is blocked.
All cheap to buy from VW, but you can get this stuff from GSF too. You'll have to phone or go into one of their branches though, they don't have synta silver listed on their web page.

cool I'll get it ordered from Stuart at GSF in Leeds cheers

Synta gold or silver is fine.
-
Cool I'll do it after I fit my concept 300  Is synta silver synthetic? and also who makes oem filters???
cheers guys

Silver is semi synthetic
Gold is fully synthetic
both are fine to use.
I would buy the oil filter from VW, not expensive so why buy a copy?
-
what does synthetic mean exactly?
thicker or thinner?

Clings to the engine soon as you turn the key
And as far as buying the oil filter from veedub... I dont know how much they are from veedub but it's only an oil filter... a filters a filter.

1) Magnatec is actually complete sh!t, and doesn't protect your engine very well, as for clinging to anything its more likely to cling to your clothes than the engine parts.
2) you obviously never paid any attention to the above did you, the whole idea of getting an original filter is to protect the engine, I.E. non return valves to keep the oil in the engine instead of letting it settle in the sump causing damage as soon as you start due to oil having to rise back to the hydraulic tappets again. Stopping as much damage when starting from cold.
Personally run delphi 5/40w fully synt. Much nicer for the engine and keeps everything ticking at a stable temperature. Again genuine filters aswell.

So Vee Dub oil filter it is with a non return valve to stop it sounding like an old ford on a morning!!! And a big tub of synta silver along with everything else I need from my local vee dub dealership why is it the fiddly bits like cam belt covers, central locking and top strut mounts that always need doing!!
