Title: cheap ride

Basically been into mk2s and vdubs for a a few years owned about 15 mk2s and  a couple of other vws, i always sell them once i have got them near perfect as i worry about fuel consumption. However I find the so easy to work on and can basically fix anything on them.

I have had a nightmare with sh!t cars in the last 3 months with cambelts failing on a 53 plate astra dti, cheap car to run and felt easier than a mk 2 obviously no cred apart from being newish.and failed mots on a clio which i apid 280 for. I have recently bought another mk2 as i cam stupid and cant help myself.

I only paid 700 for him in red 17s and dtm exhaust however there is no rot anywhere, he has a recon engine and toad larm and remote locking so yes you can get cheap golfs granted it needed a little tidying up a fanbelt, brakes sorting and polishing etc. But apart from that he is running well.

My question is what can i get i am not on a great wage at the moment and want a reliable economical car, i know this is a vw forum but can you recommend a good reliable diesel or eco petrol 50mpg that will suffice, i think even though the golf does not cost me much in repairs i realize putting 40 quid per week is not justifible these days. thanks sorry for boring post.

Use it as a donkey, drive it till it breaks, bin it when it does and get another.. Cheaper in the long run, you will be able to fix issues on it easily and cheaply and hopefully have more funds to enjoy the mk2..........

good call really should have thought of one of those, problem is i cant really justify two cars so guess the mk2 will have to go and il refrain from buying one till i am flush or dont do many mile, thanks bud  :smiley:

im running a mk3 tdi really cheap to run and there alot off spares (at breakers yards)

My friend has a mk2 golf GTD. Its wierd and one of the only ones iv seen but good on fuel

dont be silly!

you can get over 40mpg on a standard 8v gti if your being sensible. How can a second car save you money by providing an extra 10mpg once you have offset the additional running costs. Anyway, fuel is cheap.

Keep the mk2.

There must be expense in changing cars so often (depending what you buy/sell them for), so stick with one for a while and save some £'s.
