Title: Mk2 Gti 16v....headlight washer jets
Post by: dscam on 26 April 2005, 22:04
Hi folks,

My 1990 (big bumper) Gti 16v is fitted with headlight washer jets which I believe were a factory option although I've not seen another with them (except for a small bumper model).

Anyway, problem I'm having is they are not working at all......my investigation so far seems to show an electrical connector near the washer bottle that has been disconnected.  I can't see anywhere this would connect up to though.

Anyone have any ideas or knowledge of this?

As always....in your debt for help!

Duncan

Well it should spray the lamps when you wash the windscreen, so I'd assume what youre supposed to have is a washer tube from the reservoir running to the headlamp washers.

Either that or there are is a seperate pump/washer system, if so I would assume that plug near the pump is supposed to have an extra loom running to the headlamp washer pump. Have you got a multimeter?  If so check if you get 12v at the connector when the windscreen washers are on.

Do the headlamps have wipers on em?  If not it could just have had a replacement bumper at some point, which happened to have headlamp washers on it ;)

Hi John,

Thanks for the info...will look into it further.
The lights don't have wipers and none did to the best of my knowledge.  I've found that the connector that appeared to be dangling should in fact be attached to the washer bottle at the front....I did this hoping the mystery would be solved but alas still nothing when I activate the windscreen washers (I tried with lights switched on too just in case...).

So, either there is a bad connection somewhere or they are not connected at all.  Will keep ypu posted.  Anyone else got any thoughts?

Ah ok then.  I should have done this first, but I checked on ETKA and it isn't very clear on how its set up.  It looks like the windscreen washer reservor should have 2 pumps, one for the front/rear wipers and one for the headlamps.

It sounds to me like the reservoir was damaged and then swapped with a normal one, probably because a headlamp washer type reservoir is going to be hard to find!

the washer bottle for cars fitted with headlamp washers is MASSIVE i think it holds 8 litres or something silly like that. a mate of mine has them on his 8v

By the way, have you tried using them with the lights on, Think the headlight washers only work when the lights are on.

I will check my car to see where the wires go for you, in the next couple of day's, not near my car atm, but I have a small bumper 16v with headlight washers.

Thanks for all the posts guys....

I have tried a few things but still no joy.  Crash, I've had a go with the lights on as thought this would make sense but still nothing.  Might just be blocked jets/tubes....

The 'dangling' wires I mentioned connect onto the front of the washer bottle with a push on connector.

Gambit was right...the washer bottle is massive on the car compared to other Mk2's so at least I know the car came from the factory like this.
