Title: Any advice on selling car, good free places to advertise, other VW forums etc?
Post by: The Dave on 09 October 2011, 15:08
Hi guys. I am leaving the fold and have put a deposit down on an EP3 Civic Type R.

I have got my Golf up for sale... to what seems to me like a cheap price!

It is on a few VW forums (here, ukmkivs, ed38), some other forums dotted around, ebay as a classified advert, gumtree, preloved...and I aren't having much luck.

This is the car/ad: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=201950.0

Basically, if anyone has any comments about it that would be great. Any pointers, if it's too much/too honest maybe?! I aren't sure.

I am also looking for good sources to advertise for sale if anyone can recommend any. I aren't sure Pistonheads will work nor the Autotrader. To me the car is cheap, it must owe me £4500 over the last couple of years and has had loads of maintenance and is genuinely well looked after and not abused. I think the issue is the milage :(

But as said, I've put a deposit down on a new car (a bit prematurely really) and need the Golf to go this week, my insurance runs out this week too! lol it's all go go go.

I have had a few offers of £1500, but it would pain me to go that low, I've dropped the price hundreds.... but these are such cheap cars now, madness.

Thanks for any help/guidance :)

cant beleive it hasnt sold for 1700 is a nice motor and looks like u have looked after

the way things are with insurance, fuel prices etc people are opting for the smaller engined cars

might have to count ya losses if u have another car already and take the 1500 which was offerd  :undecided:

+1. real shame but thats the way the economy is at the moment. unless your car is super economical, super reliant, super low milage or low to insure your going to get pennies, and with the mk4 they tick non of those boxes. i was thinking of selling my 1.8n/a to buy a 1.8t but again ill be lucky to get 1400 so will need to save up money to get a 1.8t and insurance so no way ide be able to afford it. :(

good luck with the sale though. and have fun in the new car

It's looking that way. I know you lose cash on cars but I hate it sooo muchhhh! Haha.

It is a good, genuine car. I will miss it but I just want a change/something newer mainly.

Apart from the milage, IMO its better than most, it's in good shape and when I was looking for one I looked at loads of dogs. I bet on average this has had 100-120 quid a month spread out on maintenance and keeping it running sweet. All fluids etc done and oil changes every 6k mounts up as well :)

Someone will get a good car...but I just would like a good price. 2k in an ideal world :D But it wont happen so 1600 bare minimum would be ok to get gone this week.

Just need good sources to put my ad onto.

The thing is its modified. You have done spot on mods but not many people want  a car that is remapped or modified all tbh. Its just how it is.

Its green not many people like green some say its unlucky ( search if you dont believe me)

Mk4's as you say they have lost value big time.

Its a buyers market at the moment.

The mileage, most people would want a car well under 100k.

Most people want an economical car ATM not a 1.8 turbo.

Dont get me wrong i know your car is spot on and the miles make no diffrance but you have to think as though you were buying it and know nothing about mk4 golfs.

Yeah this is it, I wouldn't buy a car on 150k I guess, so why would the next man.

I guess the price has to reflect the milage... regardless of how well maintained and what overall condition it is in.

Anyone got standard lights and front valance they want to swap with mine and cash to me? :D

Bad time for MK4 Golfs, good for buyers but bad for us lot who wanna move on to something else.

It looks a decent motor but........it's 12 years old and has nearly 150k on the clock. Also, it's not standard which a lot of people want. When you modify you narow your market. If it was me I would say to the person who offered me 1500 to meet me half way and let it go for 1600, even go to 1550 if need be. My main bit of advice would be not to tell the internet you have to sell it this week because you pick up a new car or your insurance runs out etc et because if it was me coming to buy it and I was that way inclined, I'd wait until the last minute and offer you peanuts knowing you had to sell it this week.

It's does appear to be hard to sell high mileage 1.8T's,currently struggling myself, got mine up at £2.5K but it looks like i'll have to lower the price soon.

It is quite hard patch. I won't buy another high mile one again lol.

I will have to see if I can find some 16's cheaply with ok tyres... should have kept my standard rear lights as well really.

Good points gibby, I will edit most ad's, don't want to sound too desperate incase it makes people think the car is somehow dodgy when it really is so far from that its untrue.

Not many are this genuine... but I suppose it is a buyers market. Shame it wasn't quite a full on buyers market for a mint civic type r which I've got myself into! :D
