Post by: Paul81 on 09 October 2011, 09:58
Do any of you guys use them for the snow?

How effective are they?

Cheers Mikester, that thread is interesting for the 1st few pages, then it just gets silly.

Can understand people from the south not thinking they're necessary but we had a ridiculous amount of snow in the north last winter.

Would anyone from the north recommend winter tyres or should I be ok with my pirellis & 16" montes?

If you can afford to, then do it, if you can't just be sensible and don't go out in the snow/icy roads

A couple of people ran winter's just on the fronts last year and got about fine (in Scotland no less!)

Have a look on Ebay for part worn's as that will be the cheapest way to pick them up

I've got my set ready to go on; by the time I had bought a spare set of wheels and the tyres we didn't have any more snow.......

Very interesting Rhyso, i was gonna ask if it was just the driving wheels that needed the winter tyres.

Found a few listings on eBay for part worn, would between 4-5 mm of tread be suitable?

Look in the MK6 section for posts by Rolfe.  She had winters fitted to just the fronts and got about just fine and she lives up in Scotland

4-5mm should be fine

I don't know mate, continental (among others) recommend a minimum of 4mm on winter tyres, without this the blocks just won't dig in

FYI Mrs doc has 11mm on her new winters

Can see your point Doc.

4-5mm should get me through this winter don't you think?

Do you & Mrs Doc just use winters on the front?

I bought a set of part worn Dunlop winters last year with 6mm of tred and using them again this winter.

They are very effective compared to the Goodyear summer tyres I had on which had zero grip in the snow, I didn't get stuck once with them on and drove through some rough roads.

I'd recommend having winters on all 4 however would be ok only on the front just be careful when cornering.
