been offerd another bloody golf with a fked motor. but think i may have this one and do something with it the question is what
i'm thinking 20 valves but whats bothering me is do i do the straight forward conventional 20vt swap, or try and put the 20vt in a mk2 that i've allways wanted to have a crack at doing ( the 5 cylinder )
i can see the 5 cyl is going to be a right twit to fit into the mk2, need to make mounts, possobly adapter to get g box on, serious adjustments to chassi legs, make driveshafts and lots of exhaust related stuff. but the noise of an I5 20vt is much better than any vr6 imo and i recon it should go some
so is 5 cyls likely to be worth the ballache ?

It would be awesome if you could get it in and working.
-
You would go down in MK2 golf history

Which 5 cylinder engine are you thinking of putting in?

I think he on about the 5cyl 20v Audi lump.. Same engine iirc 034 motorsport had in their mk4 which could push depending on turbo 600-1200 bhp..
I think you should give it a go if you can access a decent engine and box and loom etc..
If you do please start a build thread

Been done before....
There's one with an Audi ABY S2 2.2 20vt in it!!

Danny, I think back in the deep mists of time I think we visited some workshop in Basingstoke with the delightful Mr Ghia.
In the corner there was a G2 having a 5-banger transplant.
It was way too wide to go across, so they were butchering it about something rotten to make it fit.
I think it would be possible - after all there's a Northstar V8 Golf2 out there. I think it would make a lovely noise, but the thing is, I think you'll lose the Golf-ness of it - it becomes just another 'shadow car' with a load of stuff welded into what could be any shell.
This would apply especially if you switched to N/S mounting of the motor.
The only circumstance this would be acceptable would be if you were building a RWD Golf, with an ABF, manual gearbox behind it and Syncro rear end.
That would be a far more nonsensical and worthwhile project.
-
RWD and spaceframed is the only way to do this properly . None of this cutting and shutting of the chassis, just cutout and drop on .

This is the loss of Golf-ness I was talking about.

Would be pretty sweet and you have the skills, go for it :afro: Just make sure you still have that Sycro ABF kicking about for some Goof Golfy fun

was thinking of useing the audi s2 5 cyl lump  i don't fancy doing a spaceframe as if i was going to do that id rather just build the whole thing from scratch and i dont have a tube notcher so it'd be a tedious pita to do it right.
engine would be going in transverse, if i switched it to north south layout i wouldn't be abel to fight the urge to mid mount the engine and itd end up with a spaceframe.
TC as for the frount engined RWD ABF, need to find a porshe donor to cut up and also need to find some more abf's.
jay, good point need to go pick the syncro up at some point ( well the shell anyway)

Use square tube and buy in the bent tubes for the cage:wink:. You know it makes sense!

If you go down the spaceframe route that is going to cost thousands as your going to have to change the whole rear end..
I have a mate with a mk2 van with a N/A rs4 engine i can get pics and info if you want ??
-
Nah, it wont cost thousands if he can do most of the work which should be doable. Grab a BMW 3 series LSD rear end complete with subframe and bolt it up to the frame. Use something like an MX5 front end the same way and beef it up where necessary (brakes) and bolt that lot up to a spaceframe/roll cage chassis that the body drops onto. Doable for very little money, its just the time and effort that costs .

there is a really good littel web based program on metalgeek,

print on avery label and plasma away  saved me loads of f**king about.
as for the 3 seires bits got a sick E46 hanging about that can be pillaged so thats a possoblity for some of the bits if needed.
anyway did a bit of work on the mk2 today just swaped out the completly dead motor for a sick but running one so it's easyer to move about for the moment. and ripped all the trim off the outside to see what sort of TLC it needs
pics and info of the mk2 van would be intresting, also need to dig out infomation on what sort of handeling chariteristics the diffrent layouts give, i rember from grasstrack cars that mid engine mounted inline useing audi box turn in was allways a big problem

Its worth checking how many e46's were fitted with LSD's, you wouldnt want to do it RWD without one. The E36 rear ends are much easier to find LSD's for and the ramps are quite easy to modify to get different on/off throttle charicteristics as well as being easy to modify the preload.
As for layout, Front engined = predictable but very slidey (unless you can get weight right to the back) and Mid engined = predictable till it goes, then hang on for dear life. Id go front engined, think old toyota starlet style handling. Oh yeah, mid engined = bloody noisy and loads of hassle firewalling the rear end, plus the hassle of sending the coolant lines to the rad at the front.

usefull info about setting up the e36 diff
thimking if i go rwd i'll cut the fire wall about a bit and get the engine back more, i'll be up the auctions looking for a donour, but if i went mid motor i chould just recycel the old a4 for bits
