Title: what should i get, stuck!
Post by: DanSN1 on 06 October 2011, 21:17
i want to buy a gti soon, either a mk3 or a mk2, ill have around 1k to spend and i literally no near on nothing about cars, but i wana mod a little, make it better and stuff, my grandad knowsss loads but what should i get? im stuck, i used to hate mk3's but they've grown on me and are much cheaper than mk2's and also available to drive away if i buy off ebay as most mk2's have no tax/mot/running

If your new to modding and working on cars, I'd say Mk3. Sooo easy to work on, and spares are really really cheap. You can get a decent 8v or possibly even a 16v GTI for half your budget, and that will give you a bit to do a few things you want to it to begin with. You will struggle to find a Mk2 for your budget, but thats the only one you are likely to get anywhere near what you spend on it back tbh.

this is my first car btw, tweeted about it, apparently the mk3 gti isn't really a gti like a mk1/2 is

You can have that debate all day tbh. Its not quick by any stretch of the imagination, but its not slow either. The same as probably any standard modern 2.0. The Mk1 and 2s are not much quicker, they just handle a little better, and being smaller, they seem like their flying. Mk3 GTIs have all the creature comforts you would expect from a modern car though. Airbags, ABS, Aircon, Trip computer, Heated electric Mirrors, electric windows, sunroof etc etc.

Having got a 1.6 100bhp mk3 as my car and borrowing a mk2 16v for a while I would have the mk3 for everyday comfort but the mk2 was more fun. Plus GTIs are usually more expensive to insure a driver spec mk2 may be better gti looks but cheap insurance.

whats the difference in performance between a mk2 gti and a mk3 gti, presuming both had struts and coilovers with decent rims and rubber, which is more tuneable etc
Title: Re: what should i get, stuck!
Post by: murraymint on 06 October 2011, 22:36
you'll get a lot better mk3 for your money then you would mk2, and parts are cheeper, if its your first car, i wouldnt recomend getting a gti unless you own an insurance company, im 19 and have a 1.6 mk3, lowered with alloys, insurance is £1100 for me with no ncb, i really want a gti but know that waiting a year or 2 will save me loads of money. i'd say get a 1.6 to start with (1.4's are too painfully slow) mod that a bit coilovers, alloys etc, then in a year or 2 wen you got some ncb then buy a gti, mk2 16v gti ftw!

Mk2s use Mk3 bottom ends for added extras, but neither are very tunable at all tbh. You will spend a hell of a lot to get very little gain unless you drop a mk4 engine in and tune that, or turbo/supercharge it which will work out seriously expensive. If you want tunablility, Mk4 1.8t is the way to go.

For your budget get a mk3 16v, make sure the bodwork is sound etc.

have you actually done insurance quotes on these cars?

be prepared to pay £2500 upwards  just on insurance on a standard mk2 or mk3 golf gti and thats if you live in a nice area with a really low crime rate.

^^^This! As much as I dislike Mk3's, Wayne has it bang on here! Bang for buck its going to be a lot better than a Mk2 as long as the bodywork hasnt found religion and itll save you ruining a Mk2 .

Suzuki swift gti, build quality is sh1te but man what a drive, that 1300 16v just goes and handles like a golf should.
205 GTI ^^^^^^^^^
306 GT16 ^^^^^^^^
S2 XR2  ^^^^^^^^^
could go on for ages

VW's are solid and reliable thats why I like them and as usual wayne hit the nail on the bonce.
Mk1's have some horrible flaws just like Mk2's, the Mk3 is a refined version of both.
If you want to talk real GTI's then VW are not top of the pack

Yep for real.
All the cars i mentioned are worthy competition for the VW.
The term GT was taken up as a sales ploy by VW, they added an I and sold the masses an econo box as a sports car.
VW did it first so credit to them but a real "GTI" is far from what we drive.

MK1, Terrible brakes, electrial faults, rust, rattle cans hidden in all corners, iffy injection, stolen very easily, nasty crap plastic and card board interiors.
Mk2, Better brakes, electical faults, stolen very easily, unlike the add lots of rattles, K jet, dodgey clocks
Well just go back in history and look at the question and answers in the various sections.
Granted better build than the french and ford equivs, i would go back on what i said about the swift as i never had a handle come off in my hand, just bloody boring and plasticy inside.
My mates swift did an oil pump or two in its life but it out drove my Golfs and did not fall apart under the relentless boy racer ragging it got, the 4wd was just awsome.

By a VW for looks build and retro cool, but to use the term real GTI and say any car badged as such is not one is bit thin if you have not even owned a car let alone a number of GTI's

When i could not afford to buy and insure a GTI i went for few types of RWD 170bhp turbo's :lipsrsealed:

sounds you know your stuff! maybe fair points, but i got a thing for golfs, except standard 4sand5's, shame the 3 was so heavy! so you reckon 3 is the way to go, or a 2?

Mate there are people on here who have forgotten more than i know, get a Mk1/2 if you have lots of cash or have time skills and a little cash.
Get a mk3 if you have none of the above, you have not owned a fast car so an 8v GTI will feel like the starship enterprise and be cheap enough to fix when it does go wrong.
A Mk1/2/3 will cost you a bomb to insure, the first two will drink fuel by todays standards and you will have a heavy right foot for at least few years
The Mk3 8v is pretty good on fuel as is the 16v, but 8 more valves on a first car will involve vaseline and leather belt to bite on
A Mk4 will involve a breather while the brokers mate gets ready for his go

I would probs buy a mk3 8v or maybe a better choice a mk2 cl/Driver and make it look if it was a GTI if i was in your position and had to have a "GTI" type of car.

shame the mk2's are so pretty, maybe i will get one when im older, and ima go big or go home person, so real gti or no gti! why make it into something it isn't! right, i will look into mk3's, tidy 16 has been reccomended, why are 8v's so much more common though...

They were a bit cheaper and came out during a time when mortgages went up to 15% and the economy was fckd.
You can pick up running a Mk3 for a little as £300 and a tidy one from £500, I see them being towed into the scrap yard next to my work all day.
I reckon i could buy you one in my lunch break on monday and make a profit selling at the above prices.
Do look around and dont rush in, check rust page and buyers guide in mk3 section

having owned 7 mk1 gti's inc 3 cabs, and 3 mk2 gti's and a mk3 and 4 over the last 25 years...my opinion would that a mk1 for a grand will be a sh*t box the same i would say for a mk2 too. a mk4 for a grand will be a sh*t box too.
buy a mk3, but do check for rot!
the 1.8 8v... always had more low down torque , where as a 16v pulled more rpm and did have more bhp...but you had to work it to get it.

its you 1st car and the insurance is goiong to rape you...also you say you have limited mechanicle skills....done buy somebody elses played with toy...its bound to have serios bodging from what ive seen in the past.
buy a nice clean standard car and just enjoy it.

i'm going mk3 thanks to previous posts but cheers for reinforcing that! 16v is supposedly 2/3 seconds quicker to 60 than 8v according to autotrader :S

Well official figures put the 8v to 60 at 10.1 seconds. Trust me, a 16v will not get there in 7-8 seconds!

so basically, the mk3 is the unwanted child of the golf family. guess it's a perfect first car. slow and fat in any model hahahaha, ah well, we can at least make it look the part.

Not really. Just 99% of non owners jump on the band wagon. Most who have had one will defend it as a decent enough car. I've actually developed a hatred for the mk4. Fat and ugly IMO. Mk2s look like bricks on wheels, mk1s do look good and are proper classics. Mk5s (have owned one myself) were pretty good if a little uninspiring, and mk6s are lacking build quality of previous vw's. Just my 2 pennies worth, and I reiterate I've only owned my current mk3 and a mk5. Everyone has their own, or borrowed opinions.
