Rudolph???
Sorry about the quality. I'll add some more pictures tomorrow.
5-door, DSG, rising blue, ACC, storage pack, lux pack, Dynaudio, RVC, 18" - that's it.
For some reasons despite all the extra weight it doesnt feel heavier - actually the opposite. The engine is different, you can feel it - at 2000 revs there's no torque. 6th gear up the hill at 40 and was almost rolling backwords. Had to downshift.
The exhaust note is very nice, heavier, but still no Subaru drone. Cabin noise great, no rattles!!!
I can see they've improved tiny details from GTI, starting from adding rubber bands to the parcel shelf plastic clips (to stop rattles) to changing the material on the door cards. On GTI it was cloth, now it's leather/fake leather. Armrest is the same. Little nice touches.
Some changes to the sat-nav. Voice command is now standard and music can be played directly from BT source (smartphone).
Overall very impressed. Very impressed.
See you on the road!
-
So jealous!
-
The Red Nose does improve the looks.
Congratulations, anyway.
-
very nice great motor enjoy
-
Welcome to the R club, really nice colour as well  I hope you enjoy it. I know what you mean about there being no torque below 2K. It also seems to find 6th gear at 35mph!

Some ed30 owners used to say the same thing... it simply boils down to the bigger turbo. I hear a remap really helps

I saw one identical to this on the road last tues just above Newcastle on the A1
This is the 1st one i have seen on the move and had a lot of road presence  Enjoy !!
Got me thinking now !

The leather on the door panels and arm rest is this normal on the R? As i have seen misbuilds on other golfs were the door panels have been leather as there assembled elsewere on the production line then added to the car.
Neil. Theres quite a few R's round Newcastle i see quite a few regular.
-
Havn't seen any around my area, only in the Dealers ?
We must be a poor lot around here
-
I regular see 2 black Golf R's, one 3door and one 5 door, 2 Rising blues both 5 door and a grey one.
I have also seen 3 Scirrocco Rs a Rising Blue, a white one and only the other day a black one.
Thats before i count the dealer demo cars whos number plates i recognise so don't count in the above list.
All in or around Newcatsle city. Probably helped theres a few VW dealerships in Newcastle and some well paid city types.

A bit too common for me then, think i'll stick with the GTI

I love the colour.
Congratulations.

I mine has leather on the door pads and the centre console arm rest too. Even though it is cloth! The chances of the wrong door pads being fitted these days is probably remote, especially on a 5dr. It does happen though  and QA should pick that up. They have even sprayed cars the wrong colour

Looks spot on, and in the best colour too.

Any chance of a photo of this please.
Thanks.

Congrats fella on the new R-rival
I've not seen one in the flesh on the road to date. I'd love one so I'm green with envy.
Enoy

I love the Golf R, it's a toss up between one of those and an Audi S4 for me next.
RS3 is a car i'd love to own, it's in a different league to the R by a long chalk though - performance wise...

Great car great colour - well done VW
-
Thanks guys!
Another day - another 40 miles or so.
I'm still adjusting to the engine. GTI to R almost feels like coming from a punchy diesel to a 1.0 3-cylinder - in high gears at low speed that is. DSG doesn't help by going into D6 as soon as possible. So I leave it in S
ESC can be switched off now. One touch switches off the traction control, keep it pressed for a couple of seconds and the ESC switches off. I remember reading about that some time ago. It probably just delays ESC for a second or so but still can kick in if needed.
I'm not sure if the door leather inserts should be there or not but combined with the leather armrest it looks like a production intent.
-
Door inserts are suppose to be that way after looking at the new broucher i have.

Congrats on your new purchase
Great choice of car and colour
I think eventually leather will become standard in the R, as it did with the last R32's .... so the leather door inserts and armrests are perhaps intentionally standard with all R's - but who knows VW thoughts
-
I must admit it's nice to have the R guys on here.
Balances the proliferation of GTDs.
-
Well said sir - nice to have another petrol head with us as we seem to be a an ever rarer beast on here.
I'd dearly love an R, particularly in Rising Blue. Seriously smart piece of kit. My only problem with it (as has been said many times before) is price. I just specced one up on the configurator with just paint and cruise control (on the grounds that I have sat nav, bluetooth etc that I could swap from the GTi) and it was £32000. The only one on VWs Used car locator was £36000, albeit with lots of options. A quick trawl of the tinterweb puts me in numerous M3s for that amount of money. Or what about a 1972 V12 E Type Jag for £32k as an off the wall choice?
It's just a phenomenal amount of money for a Golf, it really is.
Great summary mate, I agree with all of it. When the used ones start coming down in price it's going to be a tough call between an R and an S4, tbh though I think the S4 will get my vote in the end.

It is a very nice car.

Great car and the best colour! Will be interested to hear how you get on with it and how it compares to your old Mk 6 GTI.

This one just arrived in the Dubai showroom. Fully loaded - GBP 27,000 new.
Looks good in white.

Here's an update for you then!
It's already done 850 miles and I have opened it up. What a car!
The engine is fantastic in S mode. Accelerate hard and just goes through the gears (DSG) without any issues. GTI would go to the redline and jerk before going into the next gear. On the R it's just flowless. Much better.
And now the handling. The R can do things that the GTI couldn't even try. Must be the 4wd and the lower suspension. Cornering at speed above legal limits (well above) is not a problem. It's just scary. The car just stays glued to the road. I'm yet to hear a wheel spin. A single wheel spin. Chuck it into a tight bend and on the exit you can go full throttle. No drama, no issues. It's just so predictable, so compliant. I love it.
How does it compare to the GTI - well, TBH I never drove the GTI in such a way - I was too scared. But thanks to continuous driver training I have at work I know now what a car can do and that helps. Anyway, what I remember about the GTI was that in a roundabout it would lose grip so easily. Cornering wasn't that confidence building either.
Ultimate Golf? - yes, it is.
Funny thing is I only today realised it should run on 98... After 3 full tanks of 95  The fuel con - or the bad news - 25mpg measured... The very first tank (98) was 28mpg I think. I'm sure over time with just normal driving 30 mpg can be achieved but as the R is not planned to be used on daily basis that's not required.
Very happy with the car - appart from these 2 anoying rattles from both A-pillars...
-
Good to see your enjoying your R Radek , people seem to like having a dig at the R. To be honest I was one of those people, not now though. The Golf R really is that good and does feel special every time you get in it. It really is worth the extra money over a GTI in my opinion.
-
Wait until you get comfortable with the handling... then drive it with the traction off
Makes the car absolutely fantastic fun and the reason why so many raved about its handling in the first place!

Don't get this statement at all!! I have no problems with my grip at roundabouts or problems cornering, my GTI stays well planted on the road for which I am very grateful as I've had cars that are absolutely crap at grip and this one is miles and miles better, I too have had driver training and have great confidence in the GTI handling.

Due to the 4WD and sportier suspension setup, the R is just a tiny weeny little bit better (trying really hard here not to upset the apple cart) than the GTI in terms of grip and, more specifically, traction on greasy surfaces which helps inspire confidence. I know it's hard to believe, but you cannot change the laws of physics!
