Title: Google Chrome
Post by: bobbarley on 01 October 2011, 22:15
I've been a die hard fan of Firefox for years now, however recently it's started going a bit funny.  No matter what I do it won't remember my username and passwords, even though I've configured it to do so.  It also keeps jerking and freezing, re-installing it was no help.  So I decided to give Chrome a try, nothing to lose and all that.

I've got to say, I'm VEEEEEEEEERRY impressed with it.

Very quick and responsive, plus it's not intrusive.  The extensions work really well.  Turns out it has extensions to mirror all the add-ons I used with Firefox.  Plus it has a few incredibly useful ones.  For example, I've installed an extension that completely removes the new Facebook chat, and replaces it with the far superior older one.

I also love the Sync feature.  Browser is linked with my gmail account, so it looks as if it backs everything up.  I ever have to re-format or use another PC, I can sync Chrome to mirror my exact previous settings.

For anyone not using it I recommend downloading it and giving it an hour or two test run!

I prefer Chrome myself.

All current browsers have a private browsing function. Firefox is CTRL+SHIFT+P

I was a chrome user and had some issues like yours....(plus I couldn't access any microsoft/xbox related sites with it!!, It just crashed or failed to load properly!)

I just use firefox instead now and all is well

I use Firefox for most browsing, largely because I like the interface more than Chrome's interface. When streaming or playing flash games I use Chrome because Firefox's whole 'plugin container' thing is the most retarded sh!t I've ever seen.

It also uses a third of the memory that Firefox does!

It also uses a third of the memory that Firefox does!

Is that still an issue? Most current computers come with at least 2Gb of memory these days.

There's no need for a browser to be using > 600MB though.

Been using chrome for ages, it was a little dodgy at first but within a few months they sorted it out. It's the insane rate at which they develop it that makes it so good, they had to catch up and have now surpassed the rest imo.

It also uses a third of the memory that Firefox does!

Really? Were you watching many videos or flash sites? Flash eats up RAM for breakfast, lunch and dinner all in one sitting

I suggest you check all of the individual processes under Chrome.

FF puts the memory in one heap.

Chrome divides it up, disguising the amount of memory it's actually using.

I've tried using Chrome and don't find the experience much different to FF.

I would rather use Firefox as it's open source and built by a community, rather than a giant corporation.

Why should I let Google control and deliver my browsing experience AS WELL as everything else they do?

Big web companies such as Google and Facebook are ending the open web that we've enjoyed so far.

You should not support them if you value sites like Golfgti.co.uk because their work undermines indpendent domains such as this, favouring Facebook and Google+ et al as the platform on which your content and engagement should take place.

Why?

Because this builds up a user profile so you can be targeted with more advertising.

I don't want that, thanks.

Use Firefox.

Firefox 4 has been fine for me and I shall not be going back to Chrome.

They're up to V7 now BTW.

This release is concentrating on minimising memory useage.

'tis open source

But I know what you mean. But I still like Chrome and it's settings migration

Well I'm definitely converted now.  It remember all my settings and extensions etc via the sync feature, so I don't have to remember what I had installed when I format etc now.  Plus it's smooth as silk, FF was running awfully and I'd only just formatted!

No, it's Google's version of open source, which is 'our developers do most of the work, then you guys get to finish up for us'.

Google controls the direction and manages the product.

It's open source like MS Office's 'open document standard' is open.

ive used IE for years, and never really had a problem with it, although i was made aware by some friends that it uses alot of memory and can slow things down, fair enough i thought, ill try firefox as recommended by these friends, well it seems that it wont even let me choose my own homepage, it gives me some sorted of basic google page which isnt even a google page, so i still have to type in google on the address bar to access google, if that makes sense

as for chrome, had it for all of 5 minutes, didnt like it at all, messed up my screen, would prefer to use firefox

in short, theres not one i actually like yet!
