These any good ,i dont want a front one just upgraded sideone cheap not a forge 1 as i bet there more if they still make them. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK4-GTI-AUDI-A3-BORA-1-8T-SIDE-MOUNT-INTERCOOLER-20vt-/260863663155?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cbcaf9c33 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK4-GTI-AUDI-A3-BORA-1-8T-SIDE-MOUNT-INTERCOOLER-20vt-/260863663155?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3cbcaf9c33)

I don't know about the quality. But it would like doing a direct swap with what youve already got.. Not really worth it unless your upgrading with something like a Forge side mount.

Forge is £435 for the side mount and looks like these 2 above. :undecided:

I've heard good things about these and plan to get one myself for my Leon at some point. They are much thicker than the standard intercooler so intake temps will see some reduction over the standard one but wont be as much as a FMIC but to be fair, unless your running big power, it will do the job.
-
THS front mount ftw
-
I have one, just as good quality as the Forge item and a bit thicker too. Don't be thinking the Forge one is better quality because it's more expensive

Oooo Didn't you sell your forge one? Which one did you go for?
-
Thanks guys ill be getting 1 of them, maybe the bottom 1 .Do you need to remove the bumper to fit it? and is it a hard job? :undecided:

which one out of these two would you go for then wazzer
-
i dont no james but i have got the same job and yes you have to take the bumper of as it is on the front driver side corner my main worry is how much oil will i loose when i unbolt it and how easy are the pipes to get to
-
Turborevs is prob better and slightly cheaper all in. Never heard of draft racing performance before.
You wont lose any oil changing the intercooler.

the pipe are easy to change ,got all blue silcone one ,you sure i cant get under car and remove it.Dont worry about loosing oil its best cleaning it out.I hate the way oil gets in them. :embarassed:
-
SMIC is a waste off time in upgrading, the stock unit is very good, problem is the lack off air flow entering/going through the IC, which is why a FMIC benefits, as it has a bigger area of the core exposed. It was proven on the Australian autospeed magazine tuning on the PD engines as they are far more on boost compared to the petrol counterpart.
-
right just might got like a slight oil drip coming of mine so if i just disconnect bottom and top pipes no oil is going to pis out of them are they an as far as i am aware you will need to take bumper of to get to top fixing on intercooler

Its normal for oil to get into the pipes especially over a long period of time but it wont be much oil. Yeah bumper off i'm afraid.
-
ill give it a try with bumper on i like doing things the hard way. You might get a bit of oil out the bottom pipe ,it got me when i first changed my boost pipes and made a small mess on the carpet ,that what you get for laying under it and removing it .
-
right think i am going to get mine order now to replace the pancake pipe will i have to take inner arch of to get to this and i take it these pipes go to the egr valve is this correct sorry to sound stupid but this is the first time i am going to attempt this
-
I cant wait to order 1 it will look nice with my blue hoses and uprated polished alloy pancake pipe.
-
all pipe to intercooler and pancake pipe are easy to change just slide under car i did them without a car jack.

You may well get the old one off with the bumper on but as soon as you begin to fit that new chunky beast up there you'll need more space.

The pancake pipe joins to the charge pipe that goes up the back of your engine. Yeah defo need the inner arch off.
-
gti jamo i dont suppose you could point me in the right direction where to get a nice polish pancake pipe from and some decent blue hoses mate as may aswell change al the pipe work up to the turbo do i change the top pipes of the intercooler aswell

Stock SMIC can leak on the end tank joins as they are plastic.
Anyways I sold my Forge and bought a Turborevs ice and felt no difference TBH. I need a FMIC now though, which will be here by the end of the week hopefully :smug:

Get ready with the hacksaw, even with that one i think you will need to do some chopping
-
wazzer are you selling your turborevs one mate
-
Don't understand why people don't listen to advice:

Why do you think Wazzer is finally going to get a FMIC setup over a SMIC?
Also regarding your pancake issue make one with a 50-60mm reducer and some 50mm polished aluminum pipe like I did one upon a time.
One 90degree pipe 50mm
One 45degree pipe 50mm
One silicone 50-60mm reducer
One Silicone 50mm joining piece
Five jubilees as I found the current one(s) heavily corroded.
-
golf sib i cant see mine like that mine has got a inner arch covering all that up do you getting any rubbing also does that pipe lead straight back up to egr valve
-
i cant find the (pancake pipe) high flow intercooler tube on ebay ,it was from the usa.Got it a few years back. I know THS and Forge make them .
-

Mine rubs on full lock with 18" wheels that why it was made flat at that point.
-
I'm going to FMIC as I need it for stage 2 really. Stage 1 should be fine with the Turborevs IC
GSEB79 sorry my mate is having it.
Dave we shall see mate, as long as I can get the grilles on I don't mind
-
I found the 50mm piping to get caught at full lock but it was just a tad fatter than the pancake pipe by a few mm, but rubbing was never a major issue as i did nothing damaging to the pipe long term, you wouldn't have noticed wither until you had a look under the wheel. Plus the majority of the 1.8t engines piping is 50mm.
Wouldn't be able to advice you on egr's as I don't have a diesel.
-
cheers wazzer no worrys thought i would ask i will have to get my self on then of ebay will i need a reduceing coupling from the turbo revs intercooler to take 50mm pipe work wazzer cheers gordon
-
I think even with the one you have bought it will be interesting!
There really is very little room, the one you got is a twinpass one though ain't it?
-
No single pass, it has a link pipe that goes back behind the intercooler to the throttle housing. Ceramic coated pipework though
-
Does anyone know if the agu has a 10mm hole for the airflow sensor.I cant see one, how would i block it on the new intercooler ?
-
AGU hole is more like 22mm, VW fitted a blanking plate
-
How would i block it ?
-
Bloody agu suck cant do nothing to them. i need a jap car so much better.
-
see aum are they way haha prob not the best thing to say on here haha
cheers
-
Drill the hole out to suit the blanking plate, I did. You'd have to do this with an early AUM too, only the later cars came with the smaller MAP sensor :nerd:
-
Mines a 51 plate and got the smaller map.sensor
