Title: Losing your job ?
Post by: Steve30 on 01 October 2011, 01:38
Due to cuts my job finishes on 1st Dec 11 , feeling really stressed about this ,due to baby born WTF am I going to do now , how I my going to put food on the table and take care of him. My line of work has dried up big time across london , basically we lost a 3.4 million contract there is nothing around in the guardian , but I do fancy starting up my own detailing company whats the best way of getting this up off the ground ? I used to be a painter and decorator 15yrs ago which run me into the ground at the time due to health issues ,what with working 7 days a week , my question is can I transfer my skills into detailing and make decent living from doing this? :undecided: your views would be wellcome on this matter thanks guys

So in a time of job cuts and austerity, when even the rich are holding on tightly to their money, you reckon people will pay £££ for you to wash your car? IMO you'd have to wait a while before you'd get enough to recoup, plus you need to be good at it and have insurance in case you cock up.

If you're a painter/decorator, could you not go freelance?

That job killed me off health wise although it paid well but was 15yrs ago

What *have* you been doing?  Best advice is to figure out something as close to this as possible and gun for that.

As already stated - austere times and with a new baby the last thing you want is to be trying to start a business, especially if it's different to the job you have been doing.

Get on Monster, get reading the CV guide, brush up your CV ASAP.  Best thing is that you have three months to sort your sh*t out and find another job.

Bad news is that January's one of the hottest times to be looking for a job and it's always easier to find a job when you have a job.

Good luck and I hope you're successful.

with the current climate of employment, you would be mad to refuse anything thats offered to you, best thing to do is join the job agencies, they will find the job right for you

Contract. If you have a specific skill range you can earn good money. 3 months and up is the average. Good pay due to no holidays, pension etc etc

Are you getting some sort of redundancy package ? I hope so, as this will provide you with a safety net for a while.
When we had voluntary redundancy here 6 months ago, the offer was 1 months pay for every year you served. I've been here 7 years, so that would have been 7 months worth of salary and redundancy payouts are tax-free.
Now you know about this, cut your spending right down to absolute minimum (no holidays, no car stuff, nothing), save everything you can (this is tricky with buying stuff for a baby, but there's lots of baby stuff available that's nearly new for cheap).

What job do you do at the moment ?
If you tell us what your skills are maybe someone might know someone or spot something suitable. Can't hurt.

Agree with DH about the CV. Get it updated and on all the job websites. And when you fill in the details on the sites, state that you're interested in temp/contracts and permanent roles, then you'll open up the number of employers who'd be interested in you.
Lots of companies can't afford to take on a permanent employee but are happy to have a contractor.

Good luck.

Yeah, what do you do at the moment? be good to know as i personally know a good few people that do a good few things in/around london.

So a few more peeps on here might know someone with a job or contract going.

This place is good like that!

And best of luck mate, not a nice situation to be in with a bab on the way but with a good CV and applying for the right things, not just carpet bombing, you'll be reet!

I work in a Criminal justice team as Drug practitioner in places like Wandsworth Prison, Scrubs , courts Police stations but this government have gone silly with the cuts. I fancy doing something different been doing that job for 15yrs tuning cars cars sounds good

Tuning cars sounds good until you start tuning cars and when you start chatting about it on a forum it becomes even worse

As said above I'd try talking to Guy regards the detailing, you can earn some tremendous cash with detailing but you'd need to be at the top of your game for that and been going for some time to have your repeat customers etc.

Can't say how sorry I am to hear that your in this situation

You probably know your gonna have to sell one or two of your cars. Do it now. The quicker you can free up a few K the better. You really need to figure out which path of employment you want to take. Dont mean it in a harsh way, but pull your finger out, decide what you want, and with the money free you can start booking courses. Put CV's everywhere. Dont wallow in self pity about loosing your job, think like you would when doing something to your car, get enthusiatic and pig headed about finding a job, and dont be disheartened if turned down for a few. Old dogs can learn new tricks.  :lipsrsealed:. Employers will take you on if you have more than just a few years to offer them, and if you've payed for all your training yourself, they will look on you favourably. You dont have to have bags of experience, just prove how enthusiastic you are about the role, and tell them how successful you've been in previous employment. Good luck mate, and hope things work out well for you.

As said, get the CV updated and get it onto sites like Monster and Jobcentre plus. I was amazed how much interest I got from agencies through the Jobcentre site alone (still getting it too which is giving me some interesting options if I decide not to stay in my recently found job).

Can only echo the advice above.  I was made redundant last month and it sucks big time but I've applied for numerous jobs, had a few interviews and have been offered a temporary position for a few weeks though I'm hoping for something a little more permanent

Don't expect ANY help from the government for being made redundant; I couldn't even qualify for free transport to go pick orders in Amazon's depot in Swansea

My problem was my boss / owner of the company couldn't be bothered   Decided he wanted to make money from property rather than continuing the company his grandfather started over 80 years ago

Me in the street outside my house

Carbon

Although the above statement is also true as I have an Alientech box so I can switch between standard, power map and a 'quicker than everything else on the planet map'

Back on topic slightly, use the time you got to apply for jobs.  Your employer has to give you a reasonable amount of time each work to look for jobs and attend interviews
