Title: 8v Gti Engine problems!! (HELP!!) I'm getting annoyed!!
Post by: Chris1276 on 29 September 2011, 00:36
My Mk2 gti 8v early 1986 is really beginning to annoy Me. I've spent months welding this car up and now finally I've put the engine back in to get it running ready for mot. Over the past 3-4 weeks we've had one problem after another, when we turn it over to start it she runs, then just dies after say 20 seconds and won't idle. I've had fuel issues which are now solved being the fuel pump and lifter which have been replaced, metering unit has been adjusted and refitted. It has a spark at spark plugs, compression is 13-14, head has been changed, new head gasket, has a fast road cam and the timing has been checked numerous times which is correct. We think it maybe an electrical problem so tomorrow we are going to change the ignition coil & the ignition module and see it that helps. Have taken the injectors out and they seem to spray ok although their may just be a tiny bit of grit in one which could cause a problem to make it stall on tick over so we're also going to check them yet again. Cold start sender unit (Blue thing) has been change s well.

Stupid thing is timing was set up this morning and then it run sweet, then half hour later we started her up again and it wouldn't Idle & stalled unless you hit the gas pedal. Any idea's people? I'm sure we'll be working on it in the morning yet again as all I want to do is solve the problem so I can get it in for a mot.

Put this 11 second video on, unfortunately my mobile phone memory is full so it's a short video, if problem isn't solved I will post another video tomorrow night.

Now when we start car the engine runs high in revs up to 3000rpm and then stalls. It only runs if you push the gas pedal. Any answers people????

It doesn't.

Sounds like metering head woes to me.

As it's cammed etc etc you are going to need to get it set up properly to ensure it's not running lean, or just plain wrong.

I'd suggest checking what the injectors are doing when you're starting it.

Is the cold start injector firing?

Are the main injectors firing?

Check the warm up regulator is working correctly, then cry into your beer and go find and engine with an electronic injection system that works properly.

I see more digi problems than kjet.. Digi is over engineering of a simple engine imo. Fair enough kjet wouldn't cut it today, but for its time, nowt wrong with it. Too much to go wrong, for not enough gain..

I dread the day my K-jet dies... I want it to last forever!  :lipsrsealed:

I'm sure my warm up reg is dead and I have similar issue to the OP

However it runs and drives perfectly but keeping the idle stable is a problem.

All the things that You mentioned have been done to make it run so it's time to cry in my beer!!! The bottom end is Ok but the head must have a problem as it came off another golf. The original head is Ok apart from a bolt sheered off the exhaust manifold hence why we put the other head on with the cam. Fortunately I have a spare K-jet engine with history, 120k on the clock which we took out today. It's getting cleaned up/serviced and put in within the next week if not days. I will have to investigate the head with high lift cam in to see if it has a problem, fix the sheered bolt on the other head I have and rebuild the original engine to have for a spare. All is not lost!!

Took engine out of a 1985 mk2 gti today, stripped it down to just the block and head ready to clean up tomorrow morning. Brought a new clutch to fit before engine goes back in as it was past it's sell by date. Going to replace exhaust manifold studs for when I fit my new 4 branch manifold and sand blast a few other parts to make them look tidy. New radiator is also getting fitted, going to flush engine, replace oil & filter, replace spark plugs, gaskets, cam belt. All water pipes are going to be checked/replaced and fitted with new jubilee clips, generally I hope to go mad on it and put engine in next week so the job needs to be done properly!! Just need to find some new studs for the exhaust manifold at the mo so I'm going to have a look online now. Fortunately I have a full car of spare parts of which some parts I'm selling.
