These are just a few of the 200 or so odd photo's I have of the car that's been my mission and some would say life since March this year. Cash is tight but all the welding done has saved this Gti from the scrap yard. Shame the last owner seemed to have took it for a trip through Halfords rather than working on how solid the underside of the car was. Nevermind it's amazing what you can do with a few friends and a lot of time :-)

This needs to happen more often to older golfs rather than being scrapped or stripped. Good save, looks like a lot of effort went in. :afro:
Welcome to the forum by the way and look forward to seeing more of this.

This work was done in April- May time so a lot more has been done. Thanks to Photobucket & your tread I read I'm now able to post pictures so more will be coming soon. Fortunately I have good friends like Pete who is pictured working on my golf who are oldskool mechanics and have restored lots of old classics like Ford Capri's, Triumph Slags as well as building Trike's & motorcycles. The man is a mechanical genius to Me & from Him I've learnt a lot!
I'd say it will be mot's and taxed by the start of October & then it's just a case of finishing off the outside bodywork and spraying Her up which I hope to do with my friend Greg. I have recently done a bodywork & restoration course plus I hope to do more courses. I already having my City & guilds qualifications in mechanics. Due to ill health I have been off work but I am hoping to set up a business with a friend in the near future as I don't like sitting around doing nothing. It just goes to show that if You yourself put all the work in You can, with help with friends & my cash savings restore anything on a budget. In a bodyshop I'd hate to think how much it would have cost in parts & labour!! Most of all this project from the day I brought it put a big smile on my face.
Sorry for going on but as I say I've loved every minute of the work that's gone in to this car!!!

The funny thing about when we cut the floor pan out on the drivers side was it had a 16mm bolt in the chassis rail!! This is what we decided to call a Friday car, built at the end of the day by a German who just wanted to go home so deliberately left it in the car to annoy the future owner of the car who brought it from new!!

Wow, that looks like a lot of work and a fantastic reward for all the effort. What did you do about the seats? I'd like to get hold of some fabric to recover mine but despite a search of the internet, can't seem to find a supplier....

Sorry been so busy with life I haven't been on this site for a while. I still have this mk2 gti 8v and I've also set up a business within the motor trade breaking Golfs, selling spares, mainly Mk3s as I'd hate to do it to Mk2's. I've now got my 1986 golf mk2 8v into my workshop and had it up & running with a quick trip down the road. Its still work in progress I'm afraid as 2 of the K-Jet injectors need replacing as there under fueling on number 2 & 3 injectors.
I've also brought myself a Mk3 Gti 8v on a P reg 1997. Yes I know a little slow but I didn't buy it for speed, I brought is as it had a full service history, 2 owners from brand new who lived next door to each other in Northampton with only 57000 miles on the clock & completely standard. Spoke to both the previous owners who where in there 50's, paid cash and trailered it home. I'd also like to Thank the previous owners for storing it in the garage. Yes when I brought it it had a fault due to the fact that it had been hardly run and stored away. The owner said it had a gearbox fault so I got it very cheap. A new clutch later, a low mileage gearbox, a full engine service and I did a run to Santa pod at the weekend for the Vw Festival. I love this car and intend on keeping it completely standard as theres hardly any about.
Hopefully soon I can finish off my Mk2 Gti 8v so I can have some fun in it as that was my dream & I won't give up on it even though certain friends say sell it as its too much trouble. Why should I as myself aswell as others have put all the effort in to it & if I sell it someones taken the pleasure of repairing it away from Me. No chance I'll sell it and mk2 prices are slowly rising so it seems. I could do with a pair of Type 19 doors, only at the weekend at Santa Pod a trader told Me He had scrapped a set & unfortunately the previous owner converted it to the later model doors.
Oh well its slow progress but I'll keep going just like I will with my business Classic Parts And Servicing selling parts on the dreaded ebay. Sorry people I don't really like to use the site myself but I try to give people a fair price rather than silly ones I come across a lot of the time & since nobody would give Me a job after illness I set up on my own self employed in October 2012. Depressions a b!tch but cars especially Vw's put smile on my face when I see them.
Hopefully soon I'll post some new mk2 photos as well as post a few in the mk3 section of my cars and my friends.
