Title: went for a Eibach suspension kit Any opinions?????
Post by: sezgti on 24 April 2005, 11:21
Hello there!!

Im new to the site after some advice!!!
Ãƒâ€šÃ‚  im the proud owner of a 97 mk3 gti 8v 3dr in mystic blue with only 56k on the clock,

i had my car serviced yesterday and the only thing which was picked up on was that one of the rear shock absorbers was leaking now im thinking do i just get o.e new rear shocks or do i get the whole set up overhauled???

If i was too upgrade i would like a set up which does not compromise the ride quality as i dont wanna have my bones shaked apart i had enough of that years ago!!!

Any suggestions???

Also about 3 mnths ago my middle box started to blow so instead of paying the £140 VW price for this part i opted for a Cat Back Powerflow system which i got done for a very reasonable price as my husbands freind works for them-however this exhaust is just killing my ears you hit 80 on the motorway and its just boom!!!!!

i have heard that the milltek system is a very quiet system without the booms!!!!

i would be greatful for any opinions on these items

Thanks Sez

Awesome GTi have a good offer on their Bilstein Streetline kit, just fitted a set to my Mk2 and isn't bad for ride quality.

£179... not bad!

i'm in the same boat mate. for springs, Eibach are the way to go, expensive but worth it. Lots of people will tell you that you need shorter shocks as well, but, I fitted eibachs to my last car with standard shocks and it was fine.  I'm having them fitted on my mk3 (95 with 57k) next week.
For exhausts i' hear milltek are probably the most civilised. let me know how you get on if you buy one.

The reason i had to fit a new kit on my Mk2 to was because I fitted springs on standard shock... nackered 3 out of 4 shocks in just under 2 yrs

powerflow will install another box for you, ive had several freinds have a system made and they are very boomy at motorway speeds... go back and see them find out how many boxes are fitted and if its only the rear box then get a centre box put in (not the box over the rear beam) this should quieten things down without loss of power

not saying it's not best to fit new shocks, but if comfort is important and your only going -30mm on good progressive springs and you don't rag it all the time you'll be ok...probably.

just out of interest, what springs did you have before and how much did they lower your car?

IMHO the ultimate springs are Eibach's, you can use them with std shocks providing they're in good shape but work best with Koni adjustables.

Supersprint make excellent exhaust systems as do Milltek.  PowerBlow systems are only as good as the guy that's building it.

Thanks for the opinions evryone

Flying custard as for the bilsteins yeah i did notice them on the awesom gti site earlier always thought they were a bit harsh as most performance places seem to revalve them/???

power engineering used to for the rs turbo's

Also my hubands got a Hartge set up on his Bmw M3 these use revalved bilsteins and that is a spot on ride!!!

im gonna ring awesom 2moro see what there views are on the billie's

reckon the milltek is coming out as the most suitable zorst!!

Hey guys/gals
well finally got my suspension kit sorted after plenty of hours thinking over and chatting with a few freinds who own performance tuning shops i have gone for;

full Eibach kit shocks and springs as this is supposed to be one of the best kits available

any opinions on this kit then people?????

as for exhaust cant be bothered to go back to powerflow so think im just gonna get a Milltek and stick the p/flow on ebay-gotta be worth £150 of anyones money as it is cat back and only 4 mnths old(covering around 1500 miles!!!!)

Hey monkeyalan
did you just do the springs?? or shocks as well????

just springs. I looked into it and found it was safe to do on a mk3 as long as your standard shocks are in good order. Eibach themselves and Tim Stiles say so.

Hey guys got my full Eibach suspension kit fitted today
help needed!!
right when you turn steering wheel there is a clunking noise and the spring seems to move slightly(on front)
could it be caused by the roller bearings/top mounts not being replaced???? as one side seems to now have more "thread" out than the other????

any advice helpfull-anyone had this problem???

bump stops were new as they came with kit

Also before i forget

Eibach kit is absolutely spot on ride quality hardly stiffer than standard but car certainly handles better!!!(+ -30mm)

So seriously recomended kit  bymyself to anyone thinking of upgrading!!! you wont be dissapointed!!

I fitted Koni sports adjustable shocks and springs along with Eibach antiroll bars,

The difference is well worth the slightly bumpier ride, your feeling just wot your car is doing.... At VR speeds you need it and the VW recaro's are well comfy anyway, i did well over 600 miles in one run on our nice bumpy motorways, Not a sign of bum ache.

I thought it was OK to stick lowering springs on standard shocks?!?  (I did so with my Integrale and it was fine.) Two weeks (and about 250 miles) after fitting the springs, the front shocks have now been noted by the garage as u/s - un-serviceable - sh@gged etc etc. Surely they were on the way before i fit the springs??!

Just wanted to know before i replace them with more original shocks...

depends how much lower and what car. Eibach say it's perfectly safe to lower a m3 gti on -30mm.
