just a quicky... screech from aux belt upon startup for about 10 seconds.. once its got some heat in it then it goes away and doesn't return until the engine is started up again
too loose? too tight?
it has been replaced not that many miles ago but ages wise I guess it is coming up for two years.

Could be either or. Did you change the tensioner when you changed the belt ? Had this on mine but I can't remember if it stopped on startup or not. :undecided: I thought it was the belt but tightened that and it still happened so replaced the tensioner as the bearings were dry.

Tensioner?... has this car got PAS then?

I didn't think it had any tensioners... the 'pulley' that the belt sits in on the end of the alternator wasn't replaced... but I thought the belt was tensioned by adjusting the bolt on the alternator and moving it backwards and forwards?
nope... no PAS

Nope, no tensioner...
how much does the belt twist when static?... should only be a little amount of play.. screeching normally means loose so you may have to loosen the alternator and tension the belt a bit more.

tis quite tight... certainly not sloppy loose... got about quarter to half a twist of play in it

Oh.. you sure its screeching?...
May need slacking off a bit.. Myself and Rich had similar issues with a high pitched whining noise which turned out to be the belt being too tight...
Slacken it off ever so slightly and see how it is then.

well for about 10 seconds it sounds like a cat having its balls trapped in a door... then it goes away!

 Sounds familiar.
Yeah slacken it off a smidge,

will do when I am next tinkering, prolly in the morning

Cool, let me know if thats all it was.

Maybe I got my terms wrong, but on the belt it winds round about three (I can't quite remember as it's a while since I looked under the bonnet of a Rivage) pulleys, tensioners, big roundy things, call them what you want, but the bottom circular thingy bob was fooked as it's a sealed unit and the oil in the bearings had obviously dried out. Replaced that and the screeching stopped.
Is that a better explanation ?
-
^^^^ Nope...
There isn't a tensioner on the aux belt. Just a pulley on the crank to drive the belt, then a pulley on the water pump and then one on the Alternator which is where the tension is manually adjusted. The Pulley at the bottom on the crank isn't sealed and can be unbolted and behind it you will find another Pulley for the cam belt.
Is it the crank bearings you are referring to?
-
Sounds like it's the crank pulley (the one at the bottom?) that I'm on about then. When I say sealed unit I mean that you can't just replace the bearings, you have to replace the pulley itself. On mine I thought that the belt was loose but I took it off and it still screeched (meaning it couldn't be the belt as it wasn't on) pointing to the pulley (bottom one) being the issue rather than the belt not being tight enough.
I'm going to keep my mouth shut next time.
-
Take the belt off and make sure both pulleys spin relatively freely.
If one's starting to seize this could be your first warning.
Get some emery cloth and rub it over the pulley surfaces, too. They can become highly polished with time and lose their grip, causing the same slipping screech.

Don't be daft....
I just hope for Guys sake it's not the above as that would be a pain in ar5e for him.

Good advice.... don't think I've ever seen you in here before.... Welcome.
