Right every one any help would be great. I got a 91 8v gti when i start car from cold if it dosent fire on the first turn of the key on the second turn it takes ages to fire and once it dose i get a load of smoke out the back end and its hard to rev like its holding back, its like this for 20 second or so then its fine and it drives fine and now idles well with no problems only quight a poor fuel economy, with mixed driving i ve only got about 80-90 miles out of £30. Its been like this since ive had it its had oil n filter change, fuel filter change, dizzy cap and rotor arm, plugs look fine theres no fuel leaks, HT leads seem fine and ive even put the standard air box back on ????

I had similar symptoms once... I found my timing was suddenly way out. Turned out my cambelt tensioner played up and allowed the belt to slip a couple of teeth. very rare for that to happen, yours may simply need a tweak at the dizzy with the help of a timing light/strobe.
