A Public Congratulations to you, though my Private one was much more important.
Now go and have a snooze and dream of Lord Greystoke, commonly known as Tarzan, whilst the kids enjoy their film.
Do wash him tomorrow as he is covered in jungle juice.

I HEREBY NAME YOUR CAR TARZAN.

It's funny but this time last year Asker named me the Jilter as I was going to sell the GTI and take a company car in a scheme that never actually materialised. And this time this year I've become Jane.

Anyway, get well soon chap.

Scrambled: Thanks.
Amanda: Thanks, got those pesky xenons the expensive way.
Jimble: I'd happily forego the leather/plastic but the xenons were an itch I had to scratch.
Jim: I'm enjoying the novelty of the Shadows for a while. I've finally got my hands on a set. Woot!

I'm surprised nobody has asked me why I've swapped one perfectly good mk6 for another, which is good as I have no rational answer!!

I haven't asked why as I bought 3 Honda VTR Firestorms in 1997-1998, all because I wanted a black one, then a yellow one, then a black one again.

Yeah the wheels look superb especially when clean and a few layers of Rimwax applied

I am very happy for you, not for obtaining the Xenons, but that you got Dynaudio which is superb value for money but a pain to retro-fit, though not as difficult as the Xenons. A car without a decent soundsystem is nothing but a taxi IMO. I am glad you changed your car as I know it was touch and go making that decision.

What I'd like to learn from you is whether the RCD510 and the RNS510 sound any different from each other.

With regards to your reversing situation and to provide you with good rear end sensitivity, a most important function, perhaps you should consider a reversing camera. I am not sure, but aftermarket sensors might probably not show up distances on the RNS510 screen. I have both front and rear sensors which I find invaluable, show distances on the RNS510 screen and beep with different tones for front and rear activation from the front and rear loudspeakers respectively.

Soon, very, very soon, it will be my turn to post pictures of my new purchase. I have no choice but to follow suite.

You could name your car Lord Greystoke or Tarzan or even Jane (when you are in the mood). For simplicity, I've named it Tarzan for you: you little swinger!

I am sure Andy did his sums quite carefully.

It would have cost him £1500 at least to rerofit Bi-Xenons and another £800+ to get mint Monza Shadows. Plus, his car was an early sample and being of poverty spec with old electronics, he would have unnecessary problems and expense fitting Bi-Xenons, would have a hard time to sell it in the future and he needed a change. His electronics could not accomodate LED rears either, giving him a bulb out warning. But most importantly the change makes him happy and feel good. This is priceless. An educated guess could be made of how much extra he paid out, but this is neither here nor there as his heart was set on a newer GTI which suited his needs more than the old one.

We should all congratulate him on his new purchase.

A little more of a spend and you can have a nice reversing camera to finish your rear off nicely.

I think he is unsure whether to drill a few holes in his rear or have an opening flap with a camera up his arse. I'd plump for the latter in his case. Whichever remedy he chooses, it will protect him from unwanted and damaging rear attack.

Very nice, take much of a hit on your old car?
Mad as a hatter ...... why not retro fitted bits you wanted?

how much did you loose for doing this deal?

Easy answer to both of these questions.
The hit on the old car depends on which way you do the sums. If you look purely at a part ex price (this saying I paid forecourt price on the new car) I took a hit of less than £3k on the old car which is pretty impressive depreciation for two years on an almost brand new car (less than the new car VAT in fact). Or if you look at it the other way and say I got normal top book for my car which had no optional extras fitted other than paint (and which ever way you dress it up the deprectiation on the old car is out of my hands and has happened whether I kept it two years or ten years, full stop) then in that case I got a car which would have cost retail just over £30k six months ago for £23k.
I'm not expecting to take such a gentle hit when this one goes by the way!!

I'll go back to the retro fits; I specifically wanted my first mk6 as basic spec because the only things I really wanted were the RNS which I could easily source through Darren at the time and 18'' wheels which I had sat on my mk5 and were almost brand new BBSs. Everything else didn't bother me until LED tails became available as the rear lights were the only bit of the mk6 that I absolutely hated about the styling.
The other reason is that I know full well having held a driving licence for 20 odd years that optional extras are generally worth zip when selling your car on again aside from certain ones that are deemed as essential to aid resale of certain models (generally not Volkswagens though). As I don't have a history of keeping my cars long thanks to the many shiny new things designed to tempt me into spending money that would be better off invested elsewhere I didn't want to blow too much of it in one go and wanted to keep depreciation to a minimum with an eye on the future.
Having lived with a mk6 GTI for two years, spent a good part of those two years considering the other options available I came to the point where I realised that there actually isn't any better car out there for my needs. So I plumped for one that had the bits I'd gradually realised over the last couple of years I'd actually quite like. Apart from the leather which I would take or leave any day of the week.

You could also look at it another way. If I was on £100k a year it'd be small change. But I'm not, not even a third of that and if I didn't work all sorts of silly hours I'd stuggle to clear a quarter of that. I'm not self employed so I can't con the taxman into giving me lots of 'expenses' and I don't get a company car allowance (I only live 10 mins from work FFS!!). But as I work all sorts of silly hours I don't have any social life really, don't eat in expensive restaurants, don't own a fancy smartphone or iPad, don't have a huge mortage and live in a modest house in an unfashionable part of town which is handy for work, school and near to elderly in-laws. Interest in savings is negligable unless you're prepared to tie up your money for ever and a day (which sort of defeats the object of having any as you're a long time dead) and most bank accounts don't seem to even keep up with inflation with their interest rates. Property in my part of the world is at London prices with wages at third world levels so not much point buying a big house unless you're in to that sort of thing; to me it's just a roof over my head.
So my GTI is my treat to myself, it suits my needs and gets lots of compliments and I feel proud and lucky to own one.

And yes that was a loaded question!

 Not sure what I'm going to do there just yet, the light red ones look pretty good on the grey so I may just leave them as is and put the dark ones up for sale along with the adaptors. Early days yet, still tired after a very long Friday which lasted all of Saturday too, and got a headache!

That is one beautiful car. Very close combo to what I nearly bought before my gtd.
Thanks Lee! See, I did it in the end!!

Great colour, great spec, job done
Thanks Craig.

I like silver better
 Yeah, yeah, I know! None of the colours particularly inspire me so I wasn't fussy what colour mine came in. But I do like the grey, it's darker than on the mk5 I'm sure of it.

A little more of a spend and you can have a nice reversing camera to finish your rear off nicely.

Skint now Amanda, I couldn't even afford a packet of chewing gum!! Mind you every time I have a chewing gum a filling seems to fall out so that makes them expensive to me

And thanks again to Asker for fighting my corner and explaining some of my woes yesterday as I nodded off in front of a film.

Andy

Very nice decision and result - financially cars make zero sense so it matters now what it cost or will cost its whether you will enjoy it and I for one think you will - and that's all that matters.

Are you returning your trade-in to stock or selling it with the upgrades on?

When do you collect the beauty?

The deed has been done and the cars swapped already, there weren't that many mods on the GTI so it was quickly put back to standard when I had a spare hour each afternoon during the last couple of weeks. Wheels off (45min), lights changed (15mins), RNS taken out (15mins), seat trims lifted out (10secs!!), gear knob swapped over (5mins). Borrowed VCDS for 10 mins, scratched head for 9.5 mins and pissed about for 30 secs unticking the couple of boxes that were ticked for the lights. Job done.

Fair point..... but I'm not going to spend 30k on a Mk7. I'd rather try and get a great deal on a nearly new fully loaded mk6 GTI again.

Pee'd off today. Gave my car a really good wash a detail today and noticed some kerbing on one of my monza's. Aggghh annoyed with myself...... I remember reversing into a space and just cathching a kerb at an angle but thought the rim protection on the Goodyear F1's woulld have taken care of it.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about Monza damage. Sickening.

I've had a few near misses. However, the plastic Bridgestones (which have 5.5 mm rim protection and supposedly the most) came up trumps. It's for this reason alone that I have suffered them.

There are just a few nagging things that put me off the R. The fact that they can't give them away is one! Who knows, if you bought one now you could be quids in a few years down the line if people suddenly wake up to their potential. They're still a bit ugly though. Should have left the front alone and just done the arse-lift on them.
Crap fuel economy also puts me off a little.

Cars need to die for new ones to emerge. It's called progress. The Mk5 is dead and the A3 is in its death throws which have been unnecessarily protracted. The Mk6 will follow suite. As for the Leon, it should never have been born.

The car is going into the dealer on Wednesday (hopfully not a sign of things to come as the last one didn't put a foot wrong the whole time I had it), but if you're about some time during the week I'd be happy to give you a guided tour of the grey whale. Be nice to see the Audi too (and yourself of course!!)

Cars need to die for new ones to emerge. It's called progress.
I would not say that, from a looks point of view maybe, but engineering they have turned into white goods.

Sorry VW cannot make cars, their a white goods company now and don't care about standards or there customers.
The Americans see through the rose tinted glasses some people have for VW. I won't be going near a new VW badged product again after the last two.

Were as our mk1 leon is coming back to us it may not be as advanced as more modern VW badged products but its well constructed and does what its suppose to do.

If the new Leon looks like this in 2012 I will be taking a closer look at one

Yeah those pics do look nice. Although it was never the exterior that put me off the SEAT's in the past...

@Snoops:
VW products are sought the world over and are not considered white goods. You, unfortunately amongst a few others, have had a bitter experience. However, the majority of drivers and that includes myself, are more than satisfied with the VW product. Perhaps we don't dissect a car as thoroughly as you and thus get disappointed if certain features and factors don't meet our personal criteria.

I am sorry I have to disagree with you on this matter. I know how strongly you feel about it due to the many problems you have had to endure. But, in reality, there are very few loud and lone voices that project their disappointment. These tend to mask the silent majority of drivers who truly love their VWs.

I feel my GTI is as near perfect a car as is possible. I love it.

@MAW73:
I would not bet on it. SEAT is a basket case and VW would love to get shot of it. Their cars promise much but never deliver. VW have a difficult time with the Spanish Unions. Reminds me of another country in the 70s which nearly came to its knees and in the process lost its motor car industry eventually. Thatcher was a saviour of sorts.

I see it as a white good as its designed for people who change cars every couple of years.
Its designed for the iplop touchy feely, stroke generation who have no idea how to even fit a 3pin mains plug.
SEAT is simply mis-managed by VW and not allowed to go in the direction it was originally intended to go because of VW. (SEAT was suppose to be moved to under 'Audi brand group' control and become sporty brand building on the the sucsess of the original cupras). SEAT in the Mid 90s till mid 00's produced superior cars to there VW rival.
The problem was some idiot thought it a good idea to let a bloke called walter De'silva to re-invent SEAT design direction.
VW have large problems with there German work force.

I may have had a couple of issues with the mk6 but its not the only VW modern product we have as a family had in recent years. They have all suffered from poor quality control, Extremely Poor customer service, Poor dealerships,
There built to a price (expensive workforce) to maximise profit (So VW can take over the world) and sod the customer approach. I read others from OZ,USA, Germany saying similar regular.

Amen to that
100% agree, could've written that myself (  )

Hopefully Luc Donkeyb*ll*cks will do the necessary but I have a feeling he's moved on too.

I used the mk1 leon today. It may not be the best handling car, it may not be the best image car but theres little touches that were standard i like. Like the door lights, the door sill covers, the heater that seems to control properly, the folding mirrors, the steering feel, The properly design boot handle that sits in a plastic resess so does not fill with water and rot out like the poor VW design copy of it   etc etc.

I was offered a really good deal on a run out FR+ mk1 Leon TDI and have always regretted not buying it. I reckon I'd still have it today if I did, which is saying something for me as I rarely keep a car 2 years let alone any longer. For some silly reason I bought a mk5 Golf 140 TDI that I picked up quite cheap (as it had a few miles on it) mistakenly thinking the 2.0 PD would be much better than the 1.9. WRONG! Still, I had a bit of fun modifying it and it made a good family cruiser that was pretty rapid.

If VW products are so shockingly bad, why do you (Exonian and Snoops) keep buying them?
This is my first VW product, but you two have a long and vibrant history with them. Interesting.

Be happy.

I don't personally.
I bought the mk6 and the way it went from start to today i wish i hadn't, But im stubborn and don't like to give up.
I do regular keep wishing i had bought a last of the line SEAT leon cupra R back in 2005 when we bought the other leon as one was even in the showroom talking to me!  We had had an early 210 one and loved every minute of it.
But we bought into the mk5 and i should have learned and not got the mk6 but i have a thing for GTI's. If it had not been for my mk1 GTI's i would not have had the mk6. I will have another GTI but it will be a mk1,mk2 or mk3, it won't be a newer one.

Geoff's last paragraph was edited in after I was already typing my post. But I'm not off to the best of starts with this one so I didn't edit my post accordingly.
My mk6 was perfectly reliable and I haven't had much other than the odd niggle with any of my VWs, SEATs or even the Skoda I ran for a little while.
But I treat my VWs like white goods. Here today gone tomorrow. The last car I felt anything for was my 1991 GTI.

You are correct I have a long history with VW/SEAT/Audi yes, but there older cars. There older cars i rate. Its why i own some. Its why most my family started running there products because of how good cars like the mk2 golf, Audi 100 were in the 80s. Its why we have had many happpy experiences with since but it seems the current modern stuff cannot live upto the older stuffs reputation. (Im not just going by my mk6 here. I fix and look after cars out of warrenty for family members mostly VW/SEAT/Skoda/Audi).

You say i should learn, your correct and I would like to get to the point my collection looks something like.
Audi Ur-quattro 20V,
VW Golf GTI 1.8 16V mk2
VW Golf GTI 1.6 Mk1 Series 1
VW Golf GTI 1.8 Campiagn mk1
Riley Elf MkII

Geoff, Andy and myself were posting like mad and having some innocent fun. I lost an R in the process.
Hope Geoff has stopped leaning!

Andy,

If that was you I was behind in Marsh Barton today, you don't hang about!
Car was identical to yours, WF60 plate in that colour grey, probably was your car! I was a couple of cars behind but it had gone before I could get past them.

No that wasn't me Dan, I was tucked up in bed.
My car was in Marsh Barton though, but not that reg.
It was in for a new oil temp switch. Good start to proceedings!

Thinking about it, the dealership demo is a Carbon Grey DSG and is a WF60 reg.

Spent today changing the wheels, giving the car a bath and sticking the nav unit out of the old car. Well, you've got to make the most of 25 Celsius in October as it'll probably be frosty by the end of the week!!

A few thoughts on the 2011 car vs the 2009. The 09 car sounded a little better and rode a little better (both non ACC). The brakes on the later car don't have that silly initial bite that nearly throws you into the steering wheel which the early MK6s had, and it may be my imagination but the throttle pedal seems to be more responsive at low openings.

I didn't, well not after 11 o clock anyway. I got all my jobs done this morning so that I could watch the touring cars.

Love the signature.
Well yours is Fascist Grey and mine is Communist Red.
You know what happened to the former. The latter are doing rather well.
