People always ask me what I've been doing recently, so i tell them I'm working on the car. la la la. then they say. With the amount of money you've spent on that car you could of bought a new one! ::)
What do you say when people say that?
-
F*ck off??!! :o
If people don't 'understand' car modifying, it is very difficult to explain it to them. Most people who have no interest in modifying have little interest in cars themselves, and will only ever see them as a means of getting from A to B. Therefore any money you spend on that car is a 'waste'
It does not make sense to them to spend pile after pile of money on a car, when buying a new car would have been cheaper. It won't make sense to them because they are not passionate about driving, so they will not appreciate what spending that money has created. They will not care about giving their car a sense of individuality, and will not value the appearance/performance/sounds of a modified car.
Frankly it is hard to justify spending the money (even speaking as a past serial modifier!) - lets face it, spend ?10k modifying a car worth ?5K and you don't have a car worth ?15K its probably closer to ?8-9K.
All you need to say is that it isn't about money. The fact is, you could go out and spend that ?15K on a great car, but you'd still want to modify it - its the difference between driving round in another box and driving round in your car. 8)

Its a hobby. Simple as that. You have spare income and we live in a world where we can do what we please - and if buying a new ICE system rocks your boat - good for you.
You don't really have to justify it any further than - it makes me happy. Thats what life should be about and your simply expressing your own will.
Not everything life has to make financial sense, and thats what they can't see.
The argument goes further - you can't take your money with you.
(always get these people onto the creative argument - eg i do what i please (and hey its still legal to mod cars) - completely blunts any quantitative argument they come up with.)

Cos its fun spending time off getting covered in sh!t!
-
well I just told my insurrance about my mods and they added them to my policy at no extra cost :D excellent
-
Its a hobby and find a car like mine! you cant, it is individual and it looks the dogs. I would rather spend ?8 000 on a Golf than some sh!tty new saxo or clio
-
True, only victims by new fords, renaults and citreons ;)
-
Thats why our insurance is so expensive you hit one of them and they fall to pieces, where as if you are in a golf you are indestructible. I have learnt that from experience. oops :-[

Hi!
Well i totally agree with S11EPS!I mean what has it got to do with anyone else anyway? So what if you spend your money on your car, even though its only worth 5k!, what about those who, when they have driven off the forecourt, lose about 1-2k in depreciation. no one says nowt to them! It's even harder for us lasses to explain to our friends that we are going to spend money on a car instead of shopping for clothes!
Only a true modifer will understand and if they aren't one, BOLLIX them!
Dinky :-*

Dont change then Adam, they look cool..... Pls
-
I know, they do look good, but they are 7 years old and 100% kerbed, there is slight buckle in the rear nearside, and the rear off side is so badly kerbed that it leaks air. I really need a new set and I cant find anything I like. Believe me I've spent months looking. These ones are Antera's, so they are pretty decent, but they just dont make them any more. I wouldn't mind getting them sorted but I reckon they are probably past it. Unless anyone reckons different.........

I get it all the time. "why do you spend all your time and money on that old a55 car" how about it's my money and i'll spend it on what I like. at least the VW's are worth putting money into as they have some sort of resale value. At least I am not stuffing piles of cash into a renault or vauxhall that will never be worth more than 350 quid. :) might as well flush it down the loo.
-
VW have always been worth hanging onto since the early days of the beetle, they make cars with character, you find yourself driving around for no reason , no meaning to your journey.
I agree with you 8916vGTI. You are keeping a great car on the roads and helping to prevent the roads being filled to the brim with bland euro boxes.

Erm, don't see it.
If you buy an 8v Mk2 for 1k, spend 2k on parts and putting it right - don't kid yourself - it'll still be worth 1k.
Its a labour of love, a hobby, call it what you will, but it is a waste of money. But, its a waste of your money. And thats the important bit.
I have a Mk2 16v being rebuilt, everything is absolutely standard and VW supplied. To me, its value when finished will easily be 5 figures. But if I sold it, i'd only get 5k back.
But why do i do it? Cause I love the car and its my money. And it'll sit in a garage and only lovingly let out when its warm and dry and daylight.
But thats when the car comes back though. Its been delayed again (sob).

Any car is a waste of money really! as you are only ever going to get a fraction of your investment back when you come to sell. At least with VWs you will still get some money back unlike renaults, fords etc.. where you will get fook all! ;)

Up to a point. With a Golf you are fairly safe. But with a Rocco you're not. Can't imagine a Caravelle having a value after 15 years regardless of what you do to it.
The difference between the Golf and many other Fords and Renaults is the cult thing that grew up around it. Not even the Jetta really has the same following as the Golf and they are sister cars.
But then it comes down to the intergrity of the vehicle in another 10 years. Like so many things, your expensive modded car may well be thrown to one side as you get older, and within a couple of years, it'll rot away in the hands of an uncaring owner. Then where is its value?
Same place as the Ford that died years earlier. In the toilet.

Tin

Obviously your not into camper vans tinman otherwise you would know the price of old VW vans. although the caravelle is a bag of sh!te compared to a lovely old split screen.
Even old VW's have got nuts, when was the last time you saw a MK1 transit?

Thats exactly my point. A VW badge won't save it. It has to have something more. And by more I don't mean the biggest ICE system you can fit in the vehicle, I mean more from the perspective that the vehicle had a following in the first place.
