Title: Fuel economy went down after changing gasket. VW golf 1996cl
Post by: Jasikasisback on 17 September 2011, 12:17
My cousin changed the valve cover gasket and it no longer leaks oil thank you. He lives really far away so no chance of him looking at it now.

The car's fuel economy has gone really crappy. It used to to 360 miles to the tank and now does 280.(wow what a difference)

I noticed that the car's RPM's are much higher in neutral and in drive. It goes to over 1000 and it used to be around 800. Now it also revs higher in gear at 80mph it goes to 5400 and it used to to go 5200.

I don't know much about these golfs, maybe someone can give some advice?

Thanks,

Tom

there is no way changing the rocker cover gasket is going to affect your fuel economy.. is the car smoking ?

Nope.

Would a really really dirty air filter be the cause of that much change in fuel consumption?

Umm just a bit more information. My cousin stated that quite a bit of oil may have been lost after removing the rocker arm cover. Is there a good chance that this may have affected the spark plugs???Just wondering what else it could have affected.

remove the plugs and take a pic of condition if your not sure what they should look like..

i just cant see how removing the rocker cover and changing the gasket would cause you mpg problems.. is the engine running nice and smooth ? had a service recently ?

I've driven over 3000 miles since the gasket change. My friend said by that time any oil on the spark plugs would have burned off by now and everything should be ok.

The fuel economy has gone down by a lot, too much for poor plugs and filters to be the culprit.

I will take pictures and post them up on here and see what everybody thinks.

I will try to save this car but can't break the bank trying to do so as the car is not worth much due to age, but I believe with the right care it could easily do another 100, 000 miles. My cousin said the engine looks like new and he suggested that I hang on to it.

I was wondering if the throttle body may be the culprit. I have a bad feeling that I could change all the filters, dizzy and plugs and there would be minimal difference.

The car runs the same as it always has, no problems whatsoever, but I'm getting 70miles less per tank.
It seems to burn a lot more driving urban rather than motorway.

Anyways I'll get some picks up and hope they will be of some help.

its possible that a vacum pipe of some kind has been disturbed since the rocker gasket was done i'd check all the pipes and certainly a new filter should help. It sounds like something has been moved and not put back maybe what engine is it? mk3?

It's a 1,8 automatic Golf CL 1996. Was getting great fuel economy before this gasket change. It only burned about 6,7litres for 100km.
Really good for such an old automatic. Now it is burning more fuel than my 1978 Chevrolet Impala with a carburetor. (well  you know what I mean) That's one thing about these cars that Hitler brought into mass production. They work well, but are real touchy and everything has to be damn well near perfect.
Well we did change one of the engine mounts as well. I have a feeling something changed position and now the car is just complaining. I don't think it ever had any major servicing done since it was built.
Guess it will be a good opportunity to get to know my car..:)

sounds like you've introduced and air leak somewhere during the change.  See if you can see any gaps, missing hoses, etc, or hear any air sucking noises when its running.  Get somebody to rev it gently whilst you listen.

>It only burned about 6,7litres for 100km
its burning how much per 100km?   None is the correct answer!!

Pictures of engine bay required!

you'll need to host them elsewhere (i.e. Flickr) and then link to them here

OK see this link....

If you need any specific pictures (I'm no expert) then let me know.

I changed the air filter and the pollen filter, but really this had no effect of the RPM's.

Let me know what you think..

I knew I should've obeyed the rule: it it's not broken, don't fix it. :undecided:

Flickr screen name vwgolfcl1996

same thing for the tag of the photos

Oh by the way i will probably change the tranny filter and oil soon. so if someone can reccomend which tranny oil to buy from europarts.com then that would be extremely helpful. Maybe this will solve the problem, but it needs to be done anyways. It's been 156 years with the same tranny oil and filter. That's just too long...

I just changed mine, with a new clutch, cable, and gear linkage, and it's actually highlighted that my box is on it's way out. Was absolutely fine before, but now slips out of second when cold, and crunches slightly in fourth. Bear this in mind when thinking about changing gear oil.

yeah i know, but it is bucking into first when it's cold a lot, and that must not be good. I already got burned for changing the rocker arm gasket with crappy fuel economy. So I have a feeling that golfs like to be left alone.

I'm spending almost 12 quid more per tank, so 10 fillups equal 120 pounds lost. That's what I've lost since the gasket change. So I might as well spend 100 pounds replacing worn parts..

but the car keeps bucking, so I will try to at least change the oil and filter.

If the car keeps acting up then it will be time for a new car.

I have to resolve the problem, cause the fuel economy is really really bad now. I will not be able to afford to drive it if it keeps driving like it is now. Just not economical with current fuel prices. :(

ummm anyone got any ideas after looking at the pics??

I changed the air filter, absolutely no difference whatsoever...geting 280 miles to the tank and was getting 360 before..all the hoses look ok..

anyone know which transmission oil would be the best for this car?

I would buy from eurocarparts, but I don't know which one is the best value for money and what will work on this car.

http://www.eurocarparts.com/automatic-transmission-fluids

anyone have any experience with these?

would be much appreciated

hi i checked the fuel pump and that is not the problem...

car is acting up though...driver's window stopped working and the rear brake bulb blew out..

probably the electrics are shorting somewhere..

i cleaned the air box and put in a new filter,  but it has not made any difference to the fuel economy..

i cleaned up some of the connectors...there is one beside the air box (no idea what it does, but tried to clean it anyways) made not difference....

I guess I will just have to live with the now new and improved fuel economy..

I will change the tranny filter and oil..maybe that will make some kind of difference..

Oh the joys of being a Golf owner...:)

well still better probably than a vauxhaull

I have watched an 8v engine with a bunned up breather pissing oil out off the dipstick like a fountain and work fine afterwards and return the same MPG after    Yet you somehow managed to ruin MPG by changing a gasket?  :undecided:

Sure you are not leaking somewhere plumbing wise?

friend found a split breather hose..this has been replaced but it still idles rough in drive, but no longer idles rough in neutral.

thanks for finding that rich! Will see if fuel economy improves at all...

guess i will be replacing all the hoses periodically..hope this solves the problem!
