It could given that it reads the amount of air coming in and the fuel ratio is set accordingly.

Yup - Very common for this as the sensor becomes faulty, the data is sends the EUC (in terms of air flow) in inaccurate so the car tries to compensate by adding more or less fuel.

Normally leads to cutting out (fuel starvation) poor fuel consumption or over fuelling causing more damage.
