Title: rear tyre scrub.
Post by: CJA321 on 16 September 2011, 00:42
Hey guys wondering if you would have any advice for me.
I have a mk 3 3 door on stndard springs with 17" wheels on 225/45/17 tyres.
I bought the car with the 17s and they are allmost brand new vw replicas and look really good in ny opinion.I will upload photos shortly.

The problem is with weight in the back the tyres are getting torn to pieces on the outside edge.. and its not just over bumps, the arches are basicly sitting on the rear wheels.

Any easy fixes? heard a rumor about 40 profile tyres but cant see 5 percent making that much differance.

any input would be much apreciated. thanks in advance

Roll arches/ inner lip. 40/17 tyres.
Maybe some negative Camber.
Coil overs?

you might not scrub with 205/40x17 (correct mk3 size) as your tryes are too big!

Actually you can use 215/40
I have the 17x8 wheels with them on to prove it!
225 you can use with 5mm spacers!

225/40´s are too wide you need 205/40´s

225 you can use with 5mm spacers!

len he said the tryes were catching on the outer arch....surely spacers will make it worse or make the wheels unfitable?

(I guess the offset is different to yours) b.tw 205/40 and use something like falken tryes (as they are nice and square on the sidewalls unlike some other bulgy makes)

With 225's they should rub against the struts! So he must have incorrect offset wheels!

Thanks for your replies guys. Theyre not rubbing on the strut at all. just the outside edges. would the 205/40's do the job then? Ill upload a photo when im home. at work atm :-( thanks again

Haha thats great :-P i like the plate on that golf. looks abit past its best thou id say haha!!!
Im not sure of the offset. There 5 spoke alloys, look very very similar to mk 4 or 5 replicas. and they fit straight onto the hubs without spiggot rings so id say there very close to being a good fit.

Any idea the offset etc on those? Would they okay with 205/40's?

Should be a 35 offset as a guess and they will be fine with 205/40.
