Title: What should I be looking at for my GTI?
Post by: Ess_Three on 15 September 2011, 13:36
Anyone got any ideas what my April 2010 GTI is worth?
Red, 5 door, 11500 miles.

Most options bar DSG/Leather:
Sunroof, Xenons, Dynaudio, RNS510, rear airbags, Flat Tyre warning, ACC, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Storage Pack, Cruise Control. Oh, and Park Assist with the rear camera too...I forgot that.

Also fitted:
VW Racing lowered springs (-20mm)
VW Racing quick shift
VW Racing panel filter
VW Racing Stage 2 remap
VW Racing 8.5" x 19" wheels with 225/35/19 Goodyear Eagle tyres.
VW Golf R LED rear lights

Also available:
Spare set of 19" VW Racing wheels (bare)
18" BBS CH 8.0" x 18" wheels with 225/40/18 Vredestein Wintrac Extreme winter tyres.
18" BBS CH 8.0" x 18" wheels (bare)
All standard parts also available.

It's going to have to go...so just seeing what sort of prices they are going for, before I start stripping it/returning it to standard to sell on.

If anyone knows anyone looking for a decent GTI, please let me know.

Compared to the slap in the face the Procurator Fiscal has just given me, and the amount my lawyer has just taken my trousers down over, I don't really care too much.
I can't drive it...so it has to go.  :embarassed:

Sort of what I was expecting - I expected a hit of around £10k.
*groan*

At least if I shift a few of the wheels and bits on I can make a bit back there too.

Erm...yes, sadly...a nice long one.
And I even get the added joy of getting to re-sit my driving test.

i wasnt aware of any ban!! was it for speeding??? sounds like a harsh handout

I was offered my car at trade price.. basic spec with 32k on clock. £17700 and was told by a trader that is waaaay too much. Looking more like 16k

I only became aware of it today at 11.30 when the Sheriff conviced me!
I overtook an unmarked Police car back in October 2010, and got convicted of Section 2 Dangerous Driving.
Long ban, re-sit car & bike tests and heavy fine.
Gutted.

No point in keeping the GTI 15 months or so only to find that I can't get it insured...so it's got to go.

It just gets worse...I can see this little 'event' costing me £25k+ in total.

That seems very harsh, saw some Police stop thing the other day and some lad was clocked doing over 120mph and he got a 2 month ban and £300 fine!!!

I agree... very harsh!! appeal??

through my own experience I find that getting a solicitor involved makes the fine/ban worse (unless you can get one of the celeb guys solicitors)

its known that a polite letter from employer sometimes helps the judge make the ban a little less harsh  :lipsrsealed:

p.s. look on the bright side... at least you didnt undertake an unmarker police car at 3 digit speed which is what i nearly did

I thought I was having a bad day til I read this tale, sorry to hear that man.  Appeal sounds like a good deal, maybe explain your selling the offending motor and the kind of hit your taking, might make them a bit more lenient.

Might be interested in your winter Wheels ;-) see if I can't help out!

That's really bad news Glen, you must be gutted and I can but guess how you feel. There's few things more precious to a petrolhead than his/her driving licence.
It does sound very harsh how they've penalised you, so as Gilly has mentioned, would a fancy solicitor be an option? The solicitor may be very expensive but at least you might stay mobile.

It's funny but the trade in prices I've been offered on my 12k 09 plate GTI are only around £16-17k which is significantly less than others have been offered going from some of those posts. No wonder I haven't bitten any dealers arms off yet!

Your car has the perfect spec to my eyes so I'll have a ring round over the next couple of days and see if any dealers want my car as a cash sale and what they offer. If I get any proper interest I'll be in contact!!

ahhh i see... however after watching possibly every episode of police camera action, roadwars etc etc I can still tell you that the sentence passed is very steep. Not only will you take a hit now but in the future when it comes to insure again. :undecided:

I do still think its worth an appeal... however this time I would go again and try to represent yourself and take as much evidence as you can... this will not only help to show you care but that you have taken lots of time and effort to represent yourself. A breakdown of financial implications to yourself should also help lessen the blow.

3 digit speeds are always going to bring about a ban... I am corrrect in assuming that your previous record is not so great??

Title: Re: What should I be looking at for my GTI?
Post by: Ess_Three on 15 September 2011, 17:27
Totally clean licence previously - sadly, section 2 Dangerous Driving carries a minimum of a 12 month ban, mandatory retest, sizable fine and/or jail time.

I'm fully aware of the future insurance implications - hence the GTI going.
I simply cannot insure it now, or for the next 5 years.

It's a good job I got the fast cars and bikes out of the way before this Golf came along...because that's game over now.
Time for a diesel shunter.

Just my luck, I get caught in the slowest, most ordinary vecicle I've owned in years!

Did they pull you over straight after??
Title: Re: What should I be looking at for my GTI?
Post by: Ess_Three on 15 September 2011, 17:42
Did they pull you over straight after??

Yup. It is apparently OK for an unmarked car to pull out in front of me, overtake a lorry at 77 MPH in a 60, and pass the lorry despite there being farm junctions along the road...but when I follow them and overtake them, it's dangerous driving.

Also nice hearing two Police officers swear under oath that they saw me "gaining on them at speed" despite the fact that I'd been sat behind them for 4.5 miles until the only safe place to overtake.

ahh yes... the old one rule for them and another for the general public  :lipsrsealed:

wouldnt be the first time mate... I had a meeting in Lincon a couple of years back. Black audi s3 right up my hinnie, on this rare occasion i was early and unfamiliar with the cameras all over the dual carriageway. Anyway we must have come to end of the camera section and it was very clear he was pushing me to put my foot down. I let him pass then planned on putting my foot down... luckily i noticed small squares in the rear screen (yes i know... im good ).

Shortly afterwards I was passed by a ST at speed... few miles down the road the S3 had pulled over the ST. imo they were baiting for a fight... would the court see it that way??? i doubt it

I would think yours is worth about 19K on pistonheads/ebay but i would say it would be worth much more standard and sell the modifications seperate.

I was planning on selling it standard unless to someone who knows the car and wants it as is...which is unlikely.

Hi Glen,
As per my PM to you, I am so sorry to hear about this. I had hoped and prayed that the outcome would be different, but alas 'twas not to be. I think they have been rather harsh. I really feel for you.
I don't wish to appear to be a vulcher, but your bare 18" BBS wheels are of interest to me.
We'll PM each other.
Take care,
Asker

I'm doing nothing yet as I'm offshore on Wed...then 2 weeks later I'll look to get shot of it.
If you, or anyone else wants it, let me know.
I'm realistic regarding it's value...it just sitting on the driveway is already making my blood boil...so it has to go.

On the plus side...it's only 9 months before I can order a diesel Yeti!

A few people have asked about wheels, so I'll see what happens with the car and then get back to people regarding the wheels.
If I sell the car to a dealer it'll go back standard, so I'll have the LED lights, 2 x sets of 18" BBS CHs and 2 x sets of 19" VWR wheels.

Unless my other half wants the BBS on her recently aquired Mk5 GT TDI...then I will have to 'donate' them to that cause to avoid an awkward 'Bobbit' moment.

So sorry to hear your news, I know you'd been hoping against hope that the outcome wouldn't be quite so harsh.  Really feel for you and of course just to rub salt into an open wound you probably won't get nearly enough for the GTI.

Hope the sale works out ok for you and take care.

Jeeez Glen

I'm mainly lost for words but that sounds like you've felt the full wrath of the Sherriff on a very bad day  I hope that you can appeal and soften the blow - I'm not sure how the Scottish legal system works in these cases - do you have the right to appeal?

Feel like a vulture typing this but the set of winter wheels/tyres would be of interest (although I think they may be too many £££s for me) as might the rear LEDs

Anyway, that's not important at this stage it can wait - in the meantime, take care
Adrian

Glen's GTI is the best specced one bar none and is totally immaculate most probably. I would not hesitate to say, better than new.

The person who buys it will be one very lucky so and so. To a true enthusiast it should be even more desirable as it is bristling with all those fabulous  mods.

May I suggest that those of you who have a GTI, ED35, GTD or even an R on order, to cancel and buy Glen's car. You simply could not do any better.

What are you waiting for? Buy it.

I've already got a Red one, not as well specced, but a Red one nevertheless.

Thanks Asker,
It's certainly not better than new as my dealer did an exceptional job on the prep.
It has about a dozen stonechips - all touched in.
No parking dings.
No kerbed wheels.
Inside is immaculate.
I have mollycoddled this car...it is as near perfect as a car can be that gets driven.

It just hacks me off to flog it to a dealer who will stick £4-5k on it, do no prep work at all, and flog it off the forecourt in short order.
I'd rather sell it to someone from the Forum and them get a good deal..I'll barely get any more for it, so it makes little difference to me.

I'm gutted for you..... woke up this morning thinking about this.

Cheers...I'm no saint and I'm not going to pretend I didn't drive too fast and break the law.
I got away with it for 23 years, being lucky enough to own some properly fast cars and bikes, and managed to own my dream car a few years ago...but, that's the end of the fast, sporty stuff for me :-(
It happens.
I've been thinking about the point in owning anything nice, fast, individual etc for a few years now (since selling my C4S) with the attitude to fast cars now, the way people treat cars in car parks and the state of the roads...this has just made my mind up for me.

Luckily, this doesn't affect my job...it could have been way worse.
I'll be struggling for 14-15 months, but I keep my job, house and lifestyle (with changes).
So trying to be upbeat about it...I got off lightly.

It doesn't make things any easier at the moment...but no job, and fighting to pay the mortgage sounds a whole lot worse!

I'll tell you a wee true story.

I got banned for a year in the nineties but was not fined.
How this came about is IMO quite funny.

I had a horrid week at work and went out for a drink. Unfortunately, I managed to consume a bottle of my favourite tipple: Chivas Regal. I felt on top of the world and went back to my car at 2am on a freezing winter morning. Being a responsible chap, I made a concious decision not to drive but to sleep it off in my beautiful new one day old black Alfa Romeo 164 Cloverleaf. As it was bitterly cold, I decided to keep myself warm and had the Climate on with the engine running. Bad move. Ten minutes into my well earned rest, there was a gentle tap on my window. Lo and behold two cops were beside me. They asked me whether it was my car and also if I had been drinking. I replied to both their questions with an emphatic YES. Things went downhill after that quite rapidly. Being in a very merry state, I suggested to one of the young cops that he was out too late and should have been nicely tucked in bed by his mother, Oh, that he was also a young p!sser who could not p!ss straight. He looked quite angry and I, in my state of fabulousness, could not quite understand why he wad so miffed. I also invited both of them to join me in my comfortable warm car. Obviously, I did not want them to catch a chill.

To cut a long story short, they made me blow into a bag which I did badly, and subsequently arrested me for being drunk with the intention of driving and not giving them a blow job. (I used those words). I was shocked at such unfairness.

I was then imprisoned in a police van with the wife of the then Chancellor of the Exchequer. She was arrested for the same crime. Her car was a beautiful black Jaguar XJ. (BTW, I went drinking in a very chic bar!).

Whilst I sat in this horrid van, freezing to death, I decided to have one more go at the ociffer (it was difficult to say officer). But instead of words, I merrily threw up all over him! I felt so much better after this and decidedly felt completely sober.

We were then driven to the Police Station where a urine sample was requested of me. The officer wished to stand near me whilst I urinated. I refused to oblige, being well brought up and shy. So they decided to get a blood sample. Now, I knew it would be a tough call for them to find a Doctor easily at that unholy hour. I was so right. Four hours later, a poor bedraggled doctor arrived and drew out some blood. Ofcourse, I helped him with the exact spot to poke me with .... on my arm of course.

Result: sadly just one point above the limit. Damn.

Anyway, I felt proud of my drinking prowess at that time. The next day and year was a completely different matter.

I've learnt my lesson the hard way and I never drink and drive.

Cheers!

I think 'tough year' is an understatement.
It's only Day 2...and I'm like a lost puppy already.
Having to rely on my folks to take me to the bank/shop etc..argh!!

I had just picked up mothers new winter wheels from the powder coaters the day I got stopped...so I gave her the guilt trip!
It's worth a few lifts! :-)
No, I have no shame :-)

Sitting looking at my GTI on the driveway is also getting to me.

Bad news - I feel for you.

Things will be better in time.

It is so refreshing to hear someone owning up to their mistakes and not blaming something or someone else for bad things that happen to them. You've been naughty, got caught and have taken it on the chin.

I'd say all those mods have devalued it, or at least made it harder to sell, most people prefer an original car.

From Glen's previous posts on this thread, he intends to remove the mods before selling the car. Selling the mods separately will get him more money. So, his car will be stock.
However, there could also be a lurker who would also love to buy a beautifully modded GTI, thus saving both of them a bit of hassle.
I wish Glen the very best and a quick and successful sale.

Not that it helps Ess three, but it sounds like his police officers were exceptional jobs worths, I was in my track porsche three months ago on the A27 - clear road but decided that I should show the S5 behind me a clean pair of wheels, which i duly did, lets say I was going rather quick, 1250kgs, 350 BHP and close ratio box helped, then after the S5 had dissappeared a silver plain A5 (3.0 TDI as it turned out) pulled out from a line of traffic as I went by, he dissappeared in my rear view, I then decided I should slow down which I did, the silver A5 roared up at full tilt and then lit up with lots of lights, game over thinks I, I pull over, the nice police man says how fast was I going, I saw no idea he says he vascar'd me at 93 when he lost me as I accelerated out of his monitoring zone, he then asks me if I want a fixed penalty or court, I say fixed penalty, apologise profusely and we spend the next 15 mins discussing all things cars (he was a car enthusiast as well).

The result: I feel that I was a complete pratt and driving like I was asking for a lesson which I got, I feel very very lucky I only had three points, I can't praise the Hampshire constabulary highly enough, very nice police man, he did his job, I got punished, but fairly, he could of lied and said he clocked me for more, which he admitted he couldn't prove, but he achieved his aim of making me drive very carefully ever since. But it was a perfect sunny day on a closed dual carriageway with little traffic.

Anyway, motoring conviction show and tell over, I would have your LED's off you and swap with mint non led's (off my 60 plate GTD) plus cash of course if you go down the return to std route, I can also do any recoding you need as I have VCDS.

cheers

John

It's sat in the garage collecting dust, still requiring the head lifting to see what's wrong with No4 cylinder.
I can't be arsed with that either...

I started clearing the Mk6 today...gave it a good clean, so I'll get it back to standard and advertise it next time home.
The Mk3 will depend on how easy it is going to be to insure it afterwards...if it's silly, I'll break it.

You'll definately get the best return for your GTI if you sell it standard and then push the bits on.
I just think it is all such a shame, but I guess there's no turning back thanks to the ban. It is/was definately one of the most sorted GTIs on here.

As for the mk3, who knows? Breaking it would yield the best financial return again but it would be nice for it to go to an enthusiast as it's pretty unique.
Why not chuck it in the classifieds on here as is and see if someone could collect it when you get back on-shore?

I'll get an advert together for the Mk6 when I'm offshore, and advertise it, available with a choice of wheels...and sell the others.

The Mk3 I'll keep hold of for the time being...

It appears my old man is getting rid of his Shadow Blue Mk5 GT170 DSG in around a years time.
My girlfriend just picked up a Mk5 GT TDI 140 yeasteday, and I'd forgotten how much I liked the Mk5...
So, I have first refusal on a relatively insurance friendly, high spec, good colour, one owner, well looked after GT Mk5 (cheap!!) for when I'm allowed a licence again.

I just need to resist the temptation to start changing bits (wheels!)

Sounds like a plan! Just keep a set of BBSs or two for the GT 170 as you know what's going to happen otherwise!

I know exactly what will happen...which is why I have 'given' them away.
My girlfriend has just picked up a Mk5 GT TDI 140 and wanted the 18" CHs...so she has now got my winter set on her car, and we'll get some 18" summer tyres sorted for the better weather.

I do still have the two sets of VWR wheels though..and I'm trying hard not to think about how good they'd look on a Shadow blue Mk5

Well Glen when you make up your mind let me know first!
I will take your Mk3 as it is now ( as long as we can agree a fair price).
Or take certain bits off you depending on which way you decide to go!
