Title: My bad luck.
Post by: Crash on 21 April 2005, 16:55
Hey folks, I have a MK2 golf GTI 16v 88, Since I have had it which is about 13months I have spent like £800 on it, what with welding, Brakes and I mean everything to do with brakes(pads, disc's, pipes copper and rubber), and now after taking it back to the garage I got the work done at because the brakes arent that good, I get in to go home and well cant get 5th gear at all, the gear stick goes right over and it just feels like there isnt a 5th there, drops straight into 3rd gear.

Oh boy any sudgestions where I can dump the peace of crap and burn it , I am a man on a very very tight budget, like there isnt one and well I dont know where to go from here.

It's good aint it, I sold the wifes mavis to get this car because I use them for work and wanted something a bit better than a metro , I told her it's ok I have a golf before I know what i'm looking for, boy was I wrong I missed every single thing.

Well if any of you have a full wallet and need to empty it  erm send some my way, hey maybe I should write into Pimp my ride  .

Hehe, ok sorrow story overy with.

it sounds like the 5th gear plastic selector has bust. very cheap & easy fix.

im sure somebody could dig up an etka pic of the piece i mean.

alternativly, stick you head under the bonnet and get somebody else to try n select 5th. u'll see the broken bit very easily!

its not as bad as you might have thought!!

Well when I bought it, the brakes were  neading changeing, so I put it in for it's MoT and the garage said " well you need new pad's, disc's, handbrake cable + both rear calipers, Pipes(including all copper piping), So I bought from Europarts all needed part's except copper piping, also bought some Goodwich hoses for it, but since I had it back the brakes havent been very responsive, and the handbrake has just been crap, if the car is on a slight hill it will roll, so I have to put it in gear and the lever is now starting to ride up again, so I went to see the garage to tell them(I prefer the face 2 face), they have booked it in for next friday.

After that is when the 5th gear dissapeared.

By the way is it common for an original exhaust to rattle when the car has been lowered, it seems to be rattling against something at low revs and on bumps and seen as i live in the city of the roundabout and speedbumps it's very annoying.

yeh its common for the zorts to bang against the car when lowered. what condition are the zorts hangers like aswel?

i had the same problem about a month ago. changed the break servo and the vacume unit that sits behind it. cost me 200 notes from Eurofarts  180 squid being the vacum unit as mine was leaking!
Do the rear breaks work anyway or is it just the handbreak?

BTW keep the car in gear. Seen a few pikies drag cars away  :undecided:

Well guy's thank you for your help, I went to the GTI Festival on Sunday at Santa Pod and found the bit I needed  (took it of a recon gearbox ).

Well I werent that impressed with the Festival, yeah there was a lot of lads and ladies there with there rides showing them of and the guys going down the strip were entertaining, well thats what I thought till the Rocket car came along, oh my god that was rapid, and ear splitting, git caught me of guard, had the camera in my hand trying to get photies, then he booted it and my ears started to hurt .

well as I said thanx a lot and now the heap is back on the road im a bit happier.
