Golf mk3 16v gti abf engine. Had an idle control valve problem and fixed that but it now idles (when hot) at ~2000rpm. Cleaned everything out with carb cleaner but still nothing. Any ideas?

Vacuum hoses.

what len said dont work then you need to reset the throttle body, look in the maintanance section bud.

yep air leak. well air getting in.

Okay, if i disconnect the idle control valve (again when warm) the rpm dies down to the correct value. Wouldn't it stay the same if it was an air leak?
I'm thinking the valve is stuck open as it's getting the correct voltage/duty cylce from the ecu.

change ur water coolant sensor located on ur engine

I tested the voltage across the coolant sensor which is just above the gearbox, near the distributor and it's correct. I'm not sure if there's another one though.

Fixed it, used the VAG fault detector to reset some basic settings to do with the idle switch/valve. I think it originated when i unplugged the coolant sensor - read somewhere that doing this can change some settings.
