Post by: F17BAD on 13 September 2011, 13:21
so i had my itunes account for my iphone on my PC which fried to death the other day

bought a HD case and made the HD into a external one, all my files are their. happy days.

question is, before i hook up my iPhone to my new Macbook Pro, do i just copy my old itunes folder and replace the one that on the mac with it ?
If so where on the mac is this file located?  is it in finder ?
I dont want to loose all ym files and settings on my phone you see.. also what about the pictures i have on my iphone that were not taken on my phone ? do i need to copy those folders in tho my picture folder on the mac ?

i never use my Mac in the past for anything but music based stuff so im sorry if im sounding like a Noob

There is a file with the iTunes library log in your (for pc anyway) 'my music' folder, not sure for the mac, but you may be able to find a comparison.

That way, drag your music over, put the log file in the same place and it'll be good to go.

I am pretty sure you can dump your music and iTunes Library file (.XML) anywhere you like on your new MBP. When you launch iTunes, hold down the option (alt, with the funny lines below) key and you should get a prompt asking you to choose which library you want to use or to create a new one. Point it towards where you put the old library xml file and all should work.

Depending on the size of your library it might take a while to import everything (Mine was running over night when I moved it to my NAS drive, but it was approx 95gb and did it over wifi)

It is as easy as above... Until you actually try and do it that is.

Can't say I had any troubles :undecided:

But not sure if the PC variant has any additional files to support the library (cant see why it should).

Taking the libary from itunes on a windows PC to a Mac is troublesome as the libary file is a different format i believe. This caused me issues.

Taking it from mac to mac is easy as above.

plug your iphone into the mac and do a complete backup. copy just your music to the external and transfer it. do same for gf apart from the music part. you will have to create new playlists etc but that isn't the end of the world.

it won't sync until you tell it to. that's why you need to do a backup first

I need to research this for someone also, he wants to transfer everything from his PC Itunes to his MBP itunes. Mac to mac is so easy it does everything for you but i have never tried it with a PC as been lucky enough never to own one
